are you meaning you got a household sponge, cut it, placed the roots into the sponge and put the sponge in the water? was it a sponge that you would use in the bath?

thanks all for advice!!!

Biomax is a biological filter media for sale at any lfs or big box pet store, it's made by fluval and is normally used in canisters.

I would assume that the sponges being referenced are the filter sponges you use for mechanical media in filters, also available at any lfs or big box pet store.

How well will a pothos plant do if it's not in a hob filter? I just have it hanging out the top of the tank and I have an air bubbler blowing air under the roots.

Heres mine in my sump cabinet. I have a small 185gph 9watt pump which pushes water up to a small 1/2gallon tray which drains back down under the sump. The pothos is under 2x 10w 6500k cfl bulbs.

Its growing rampant.

The ones in my hob filters haven't grown much since i put them in a couple months ago. They get ambient light from a partially shaded window.

Your ok just dangling the roots in the tank unless you've got some angry fish who ruin them. I found the roots are subjected to too much flow in the small space of my HOB filters. I keep finding small pieces of roots in the tank. I dunno if they are getting blasted apart.
