This is more or less just a photo diary of my latest saga; the purchase and setup of a 180 gallon aquarium. The main problem is that I'm currently unemployed :( and as such, am doing this all on a tight budget over time, and nearly everything will will be DIY that can be. So before you ask "where is the money coming from" , the answer is: money that I have been setting aside for the better part of a year, and money that I made during my breeding stint. The sale of the bulk of my breeding equipment (tanks, heaters, filters, and livestock) paid for most of this.

Here is my current largest tank: standard 125 gallon long that I picked up from a friend. It's an old Perfecto but holds water and is currently cycling. It came with a set of hoods, (6) 36" T8 strips, a steel stand, and a new Rena XP4 filter for $100. I sold the light strips (made all my money back) and bought a used Perfecto 72" T8 hood from a LFS for $20. All I had to add were some heaters. This will be the growout tank for my stock list, and as an emergency tank if things get ugly.

Also left over is a 55 gallon tank and (3) 20 gallon long tanks that I can use if needed. I know how aggressive fish can be, so I've made arrangements in the event that I need isolation, hospital, or quarantine tanks.

The Tank: I ordered a Perfecto 180 Cornerflo tank (72 x 24 x 24)from my local reefer LFS. I paid in cash up front, and the owner gave me wholesale price on the tank and canopies. It is a black trim model w/ black silicone and corner overflows.

The Hoods: (3) Perfecto 24" glass canopies (the tank has two top cross braces).

The Stand: The stand will be a DIY stand that I am still designing. It will most likely be a plywood/2x4 hybrid instead of the conventional 2x4 frame skinned in paneling/plywood. This is still in design phase however.

The Sump: This will be a DIY wet/dry sump. I am using a 4' 50 gallon long that was left over from my breeding days. This is a Perfecto unbraced tank from the mid 90's with the 3/8" glass. It probably weighs 75 pounds dry!

The baffles, drip plate, and holders will be made from 1/8" acyclic. I purchased a 3'x4' sheet from HD...none of my local plastics shops could match the price. It was still $40 for the sheet!

The main filtration will be done with 4" x 16" 200 micron filter socks.

The bio filtration will be covered with pot scrubbies from Dollar General.

The Corallife Turbo Twist 9w UV unit will be added in a closed loop system in the sump. I know it's not big enough for the 180, but once again I'm on a budget and I already had it. Eventually, I will upgrade this to a 36w unit. (*don't mind all the computer/server equipment...when I did have a job, I was a Systems Engineer :D )

I am also building an algae turf scrubber that will sit next to the sump and remove phosphates/nitrate. This will be a simple design using clip on light fixtures, (2) x 23 watt R40 fluorescent floods in 2700K, and double layer knitting mesh.

The return pumps are (2) Quiet One 4000s. One pump will also be used to run water through the TurboTwist and the algae scrubber. I'm expecting about a 7x turnover rate in the tank per hour. I'm a big fan of the mag Drive pumps, however the Quiet Ones had many advantages. They are quieter, use 1/2 as much power, have 1" returns, and were cheaper than the Danner units. I don't like the plastic construction of the QO pumps, but people swear by them and I thought I'd give them a try.

The substrate will be pool filter sand a large grain gravel mix. Decorations will include some locally found granite cobbles and Malaysian driftwood and Manzanita branches. The tank will also be planted; I'm looking for something lively and natural.

My initial stock list will be as follows:

-(1) Paratilapia polleni
-(1) Parachromis Fredricksthalli "la Ceiba" yellow Head
-(1) Vieja Argentea
-(1) Herichthys carpintis ‘Escondido’
-(1) Paratheraps Bifasciatus
-(1) Amphilophus Citrinellus
-(1) Datnioides Polota

If I have aggression issues, I can always pull out the problem fish. I've always pushed the envelope with my old world cichlids, and I know sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

More pictures to come. In the meantime, here is a pic of me swimming in the 125 :D

oh oh oh. Forgot to mention.

I will be incorporating an Arduino board that will be hooked up to the low and high water tank and sump float switches. I will also be adding a temp sensor to the Arduino so that i can monitor water levels and temps remotely on my cell just to keep an eye on things. The setup will be interfaced with my server, and I will probably monitor everything in realtime from my computer. Yes, I am that much of a geek.

If you aren't familiar with Arduino, check them out. It's pretty cool stuff.

I'm a big fan of the Quiet One 4000's.. I have 4 of them myself, two each on my 125g tanks. They work great, are quiet, and very energy efficient!
