no i've been slowly adding salt over the last two months, i add very little every week, it still isn't even reading on my hydrometer yet, which starts at 1.012

I can't remember the name of it, i threw out the package and put it in a air tight container, i know it was not aquarium salt, it was maybe instant ocean? it had a clown fish on the the package and it was a silver bag
 
What is the nitrite? You need a hydrometer that starts at 0. pH is quite low--should be around 8 for a BW puffer. I would still do the upgrade, as my adult would have been thrilled with a 55 for himself. Just use plenty of decor (check my pics) & the tank won't look so empty. Also, check out my GSP article in the library of my forum.

Nitrite is <0.3 mg/l

I just noticed that my master test kit doesn't have a nitrate test in it..
