Were you keeping them in freshwater? A 55G sounds better for two of 'em. Some people will suggest bigger WCs than 20%.

What is the nitrite? You need a hydrometer that starts at 0. pH is quite low--should be around 8 for a BW puffer. I would still do the upgrade, as my adult would have been thrilled with a 55 for himself. Just use plenty of decor (check my pics) & the tank won't look so empty.
