I got a puffer about 2 weeks ago and just recently hes been causing me problems, hes killed two of my bass and just killed my dollar sunfish, that was the last straw, I dont know what to do, there must be a way to get him to stop nipping the fins off all my fish? Should I have more cover, have have some plants in there, its not a ton but it helped with my jags aggressiveness. help me out guys, I want to start a salt tank for him but I could never keep any fish with him if he keeps doing this.

There's not really anything you can do with a fish like that. Most puffers are aggressive and territorial and will constantly nip at your other fish until they are the only one left.

I had a similar problem a couple years ago. This is the puffers special way of telling you "dont put me in a community tank" . He left really cool circular bite marks but the novelty wore off and I found him a new home.

Its a Gsp in a 55 growout tank, I plan on moving him to a thirty where I will acclimate him to brackish then salt, I wanted a salt community tank but if hes going to be a problem then I dont know what to do.

Green spotted puffer^^^

GSP's do VERY poorly with tank mates...as do most puffers..

Your only chance of having a tank mate with a GSP, is to bring the GSP to full marine...and TRY fish like damsels and clowns (not maroon clowns)...but then he would need to be in a big enough tank to do that...and it would depend on the temperament of the fish.

And just in case you do not know, they need hard shelled foods to keep teeth down

AND....If you got this fish from WALMART..do not take it back there, they will most likely flush it...instead donate it to a mom and pop pet store.

Will I be able to keep them with other GSPs?

Thanks for the threads, I did quite a bit of research prior and figured hed be alright with my larger fish as they wouldnt allow him to nip, but i recently added some smaller fish and hes causing havoc. I am considering taking him to the local lfs but my girlfriends attached to him, but I dont keep solitary fish, seems like a waste to me.
