my puranha are pussies!!! help!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
add 1 more red belly to the group. add some surface plants to dim the lights and let them adjust. though you will still need to upgrade to a 75gal+ soon so just be ready for that

Just give it time. I always feed them with the lights on so they can get used to it. It took mine about 5 weeks before they would take a nip from a goldfish. Now, a goldfish doens't even last for 5 minutes. All that remains is it's head. But that's taken care of by my lobster/crayfish.

there not pussies , if you wait longer to feed and only feed live the get very agessive

A few days ago I did the first water change, they were fine for me watching them for hours before then, but now that they've reached the 2" mark, they have become more skittish. They have killed live fish infront of me, and last night was the first time i've ever seen them actually eat krill. After they ate live fish the first time, they didnt eat for 2 more days so you have to be patient with them. How big are they?

lol sorry i got 2 rbp i just got them they are about 6 inches big and they run when ever i get close to the tank and hit alot of stuff and i put feeder fish in the tank and they are scared of them like i had a gold fish bite the rbp but in the morning when i go to work it's gone lol they will never eat in front of me only in the dark i seen alot of videos of them tearing up stuff with the lights on is there some thing i can do to get them to eat in front of me? sorry to sound like a nubie... first post....

Ive owned RBP's for about 8 years now.. IMHO, It's better for the fish, and more fun for you, to get them while they are just babies and nurture them to adulthood.. you will form a bond with your red bellies unlike any other animal. The strong will survive and the weak will be naturally culled. Yeah it sucks, but that;s just naturual selection for ya. Just recently got in 13 1" RBP's about two weeks ago, and they are doing wonderful. They are now starting to come up to the front of the tank when they know it's feeding time! I've got a really nice bunch here, I'm very happy with my little killers.

I have one right now, and he has plenty of hiding places. I've had him for a month, and he's still not ready to be active all the time. At night he lets me watch him while he eats, but during the day, and unless the bedroom lights are off, he won't touch a bite.

Give them time, they'll come out of their shell.

my piranahs were the same way, even if i got anywhere near the tank theyd freakkkk out busting into the heater and the walls of the tank, they stoped eatingin front of me eventually too so i gave em away...pretty fish and cool to watch eat (those few times they do eat in front of you) but verry skittish.

pirahna have a much tougher reputation than they deserve. FOR THE MAJORITY. Dont get me wrong there are some real bruisers out there, but most are wimps.
