I did some research on Jags b4 I purchased 2 as 2 1/2 inchers. I was told they were mean and would kill anything in their tank. I have a male and female, never spawned cause my boy is a weenie. ( She kicks his butt all the time)

Some info on the Jags, male is 9 inches female about 8, in a well furnished 200 g.

Well I gave up on hoping they would spawn, and had some angle fish I had to get rid of. The nearest fish store is an hour away and I just decided to feed them to the Jags. The angles were little bigger than quarter size...he (they) did not eat them.

I had a friend give me 5 more little angles, they did not eat them...now I have 7 angles and the two Jags. I had an african that is 2 inches long, decided to feed him too, he is still in there, and I started adding other little africans to my "Jag" tank! I figured what the heck.
It looked plain with out all the little fish in there anyhow.

To all of those that said...they will kill EVERYTHING, and will bite you when you clean the tank I say Pooey! LOL Mine are real kittens!
I'll get a pic to post...It's just crazy the luck I have.

Also, in order to get a breeding pair, I have thought about selling the female and getting another, possibly more passive. Should that work? (and removing my little fish) What should I be looking for in another female?

Thanks!

If you keep them well fed it may be that they don’t see them as a threat since they are so much smaller than them. If you want to test this put a 5” or 6” fish in there with them. I don’t really recommend this so please don’t flame me J But a lot of larger territorial fish exhibit this behavior. And it could be you just have two extremely passive Jags:D

LOL! My jag is the same way. He's a beast and looks like a bruiser but he is so passive it's not funny.

I think their agression is over rated and is probably more of a territorial thing. If you put them in a small tank, they'll seem more agressive because they want the whole thing for themselves. Put them in a big tank and they become "Wimps". I could be wrong, but that's my $.02

They very so greatly in demeanor, I've been keeping them off and on for 16 years. I have 2 little tyrants at present, and one female about 5" she is a total dud, no personality, damn Bish..... Red Devil's imo are the only consistent terrors that I've kept, everyone of them have been relentless bastards.....:nilly:

I have owened many jags of different sizes and temperment over the years :headbang2 and i do think that they are overated in the agro area. The only time i have seen them blood thirsty :WHOA: is when the fry are free swimming and that is with every pair i have had.I have had 1 true killer jag and none since that was so mean it was ridiculous it broke a new heater and knocked the top off he went back to the lfs a long time ago.It is also harder to get them to pair up with a new fish when they are grown i have had good luck making pairs by going to different lfs and getting 2 or 3 juvy's at each stop and put a bunch in a big tank and wait.:grinno: lol

My Jag must be an exception becuase he unfortuantely is bullying everything in my tank including Dovii bigger than him ...he is just about 14 inches.

I'm glad to hear all of this, I figured I had mentaly challanged fish! LOL

Thanks Big Train, I think I will get a few females and raise them up to see if Speck likes them better, or vise versa. I called my LFS and told them how the female does when it is time for her to spawn and he told me she sounds a bit messed up.

She will not spawn with the male, she will NOT lay the eggs on a surface, but will swim around dropping eggs in mid water and will turn back and eat them.

This has happened about 10 times since I've had her. I got her as a baby (2 inches) so I dont know if she will grow out of it.

I will send pics asap of "community Jag tank" LOL

aha! congratulations! my large male JD is just like that, lives with a bunch of goldfish and never hurts them
