Scott's Breeding Log (started on Monday 3rd December 2012)

Over the next few months i will be hybridising and experimenting with a few cichlids from different families i.e. one from the 'Amphilophus' family and another from the 'Hericthys' family (this is not what i am breeding fyi) The breeding project will be carried out in my family home, the breeding tank is a 4 x 18 x 26 (L x W x H) and the grow-out tank (for the fry) is 3 x 18 x 18 (L x W x H). The tanks are both set up and ready to commence in the process of this project, which will be updated as often as possible.

The aim of this project is simple, to breed two different cichlids together and be able to fully document the process of this and also show progress of the offspring as they grow. This project will include breeding one fish from the Paraneetroplus family, and another from the Cryptoheros family.

The two fish are: (photos are of actual fish taken today [3/12/12])

Paraneetroplus Zonatum (male)

Cryptoheros Cutteri (females x 2)

I am hoping that in cross breeding these fish i will achieve a fish that does not grow very large, yet shows many characteristics of the vieja. The stock that these Cutteri come from show sizeable nuchal humps in the males at only 10cm.

Below is a photo of the breeding tank, which has been kept as simplistic as possible while still staying aesthetically pleasing.

The Cutteri are currently able to breed, they have bred several times in the main tank with male cutteri, so i thought i would give it a show with trying to breed them with my zonatum.

please stay tuned for more updates

i have also found this thread, which shows Zonatum x Convict, i will be happy to achieve anything like this. all credit for this thread goes to @hungryhomer

Aye, definitely. Keep us updated.

Good start, definitely, with multiple females that have breed previously.

From what I read though, Zons are predominantly substrate spawners, so you may find yourself having to remove the pots to force the cutteri to spawn on the plate.

When I breed my Con and Ellioti, the Ellioti refused to fertilize the eggs when they were laid in the pot, only when I removed the pots and the Con had to lay on a rock that the eggs got fertilized. Not sure if it'll happen with your Zon and Cutteri, but keep an eye out for it.
