I bought a filtration product today and set it up in my wifes 55 gallon tank today. Im going to give my "personal" thoughts on what i think of this product. I will be judging it on 3 basic criteria, Quality/Workmanship, Price, and Ease of use/setup.
I just want to let everyone know, up front, that these are my thoughts on the product itself. If you own this product, please dont take this personally.
The filter that I bought is a MARINELAND MAGNUM 350. This is a canister style filter that is rated to filter a 100 gallon tank.

Right out of the box, i was dissappointed. The quality of the parts are clearly cheap. the intake and outlet tubes are made of a molded brittle plastic that could easily crack. There are so many seals and washers that itll make your head spin.
there is a rubber ring that seals the top of the pump to the canister that DOESNT SIT IN A GROOVE. so when you take it off, it falls in the canister or flings somewhere. Also, you have to perfectly line up the top, media storage, and 3 washers inside the canister. If you dont, either the top will leak all over the floor, or the inlet tube leaks inside the canister. So when you pull the lid back off, your filter media spills all over, the ring that is in a groove on the lid flings, and the washers fall on the floor or in the canister....all the while your dripping water everywhere.:screwy:
I almost forgot to mention how cheaply the lid fasteners are. the first attempt at closing the lid yielded a lost fastener. The thin just fell out. I dont want to go into detail about it but trust me.....ITS CRAP!!
The thing that p***** me off the worst about this product is that unless you buy the "pro" version....YOU DONT GET AN BIO-FILTRATION!! WTH
That problem brings me to pricing. With a price tag 20 bucks shy of a fluval 405, i thought i was gettin a deal. WRONG!! If i knew what this thing was gonna be like before i bought it, i wouldnt have given more that 25 bucks for the whole system. The whole whole set-up is just plain kitty whompas.
Maybe I might be spoiled by the supperior quality that I've been happy to have with my fluval. Its genius how simply the baskets make adding media. Maintainance is a cinch.
All in all, this product is GARBAGE.
PRICE...At a mere 20 bucks shy of the Fluval = RIPOFF
QUALITY...or should i say, LACK THERE OF!!
EASE OF USE...sorry, i dont have the time to line uo six friggin things to make sure the lid is on right and nothing leaks!!

i got the pro and I like it pretty good. has worked fine for me.

I have 2 350's and have never experienced any problems with them. They start easy and do a great job of keeping my water spot on. One mans treasure is another mans trash I guess.

I don't care for my Fluval canister at all, but it's a lot better than the magnum I have.....

The magnum is basically worthless. I'll use it as a powerhead or polishing filter, but I don't rely on it for anything serious. Cheap as hell, brittle, and pretty much everything that you described. It's enough to piss off the pope if you pay full price.

Running 2 350 pro, never had any problems with them for the past 10 years, but the Fluval... let's just say.... NO THANKS!!!

I also run a 350 pro and have never had any problems with it.,., lining up the tube with the top isnt hard if you pay attention to what your doing.,., you can see the connection through the outer casing., anyways,., I use it., I love it.,., my waters never been cleaner.,., got it cheap.,., Foster and smith., the pro was only $5 more.,. so why not.,., either way., less then $100 for a decent canister filter for my 75., I also run a emperor 400 hob on there.,., both great product.,., in my mind

Wow its not another rant about AC. Anyway i have a few mag 350's and they don't give me any trouble. And about the biological filtration, This bacteria grows on every surface of your aquarium. Not just in the filter. I am pretty sure that the magnums directions assume that everyone is fimiliar with the nitrogen cycle. And that is just not so. In the directions the arrow that points to the basket container that they call a media basket, that is where you CAN put any media you choose like carbon, zeolite, scrubbies, bio-max, lava rock, ceramic rings, sintered glass, etc, etc. ---------Basically a filter is just a pump that moves water it is up to the user to make the most out of it by using it properly and or stocking full of the best media's.

i just dont understand why you dont get bio filter in ther 350 mag!! how are you supposed to colonize beneficial bacteria??

why not buy pro? they only cost 3 dollars more. mine has done me great and I would buy another one any day if I was staying with fresh water. I did think that the o-ring wasn't the greatest, but it's okayl
