My "fatty" as I lovingly call him is normally a very aggressive eater, 2-3 shrimp 2x a day and he pretty much always attacks them right away. Since Sat, he hasnt eaten much of anything. Im at the office now and cant provide water params, any ideas? Hes been fine with his current tankmates for some time and eating as per his normal, but just stopped and now looks thin. Any idears?

Glad you know to check your water. Do you feed anything else besides shrimp? And what kind of shrimp are talking about? Also, add any new tank mates or even live feeders?

I was feedign him jumbo confirmed freshwater shrimp from my local grocery store, and when they were out of stock, Id use tilapia filet. HE gets his hands on some flake and pellets from the tankmates that floats down, and a snack of bloodworms when I feed my eels. This time around, my buddy who also keeps rays was coming over, and I asked if he could swing me some shrimp on his way, he got me shrimp, but smaller than my normal selection. At first fatty was all over them, but now just wont eat. He was sifting bloodworms last night, I think he may just not like these shrimp or something. My brother will have my water params once he gets home, and my buddy is en route to try and hospitalize if needed. I just dont want to lose him, hes the entire reason I started keeping fish, and here I am 4 tanks later worried about my "star"...

:(

No new tankmates in the past month, everyone has been happy together, and I dont give my ray feeders. If I Cannot grow them myself to confirm them disease free, its not worth the risk...

My Motoro rays can be picky between two different sizes of same-brand shrimp so it's not completely impossible that he's just used to something slightly different.

id stick to the jumbo shrimps anyway, my fish will not accept the "salad shrimp" as they did when they were smaller. I find the salad or de-tailed shrimp to be freezer burned and not nearly as good of quality as the cocktail shrimp you need to detail. They are half the size and get a bit foul when thawing. you get what you pay for and if I wouldn't eat it I won't feed it to my fish. Especially a ray

It seems slightly odd to me that after only a few days without food he would start to look thin. I would keep an eye on his feces and if the water parameters all check out start to consider parasites

It could also just be the food your offering, it just seems weird that he would look thin so soon to me

Gonna get water params tonight, hes in a hospital tank now, so if anything in the water was the cause, he should come back to me. Hes not curling at all, I freaked out last night thinking he might be, but after I turned off my pumps, he flattened out perfectly. Think I caught it early enough to bounce him back, but only time will tell.

Keep my fatty in your prayers :(

seems kindof weird that u moved him to a new tank without knowing the problem first.

u check params?

Yeah I am not sure the added stress of moving it was the best bet yet. a bit hasty.

ya, I would have left him were he was. If he was not eating, and then added stress of the move, might have made worse.
Check water... in the tank he was always in..... try seeing if he will eat earth worms. I cant see him losing that much fat base in just a few days, so may just be the shrimp.... will he eat anything else or nothing at all????

we also here have been working on a emergency list...
