My rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Setup and Rays look great. Bout time you shared a pic of it all.
X3 on the type of substrate.

Thanks all for the kind comments! I consider any ray to be amazing, but I sure do like the hystrix.

The pothos do help with nitrate, but it still ranges between 20 and 40 ppm. On the other hand, my water change schedule is reduced as a 16 month old son keeps us rather busy:)

In the 3rd picture, the male is the largest of the rays ( he is on the left) at just over 7" with a female in front and behind him. One female is about 5.5" and the other near 6.5". The little rectic is about 4.25".

THe substrate I collected from a local river. Took forever to rinse, and I put it through a 2mm sieve to get the grain size I liked. I collected this gravel over the course of the last year as I didn't get to the site very often.

My tank is plenty stocked now. Have considered adding another ray but the future doesn't look good for upgrading to a larger tank.

Wow you collected the substrate from the river? That is so cool! I like it a lot! Nice rays and tank. How many gallons and what are the dimensions?

Nice pics.:D

If he adds more rays they it may overstock when they grow.

I like the pothos dangling - is this keeping Nitrates at zero?

Do you think you will get fighting with the 2 males?

Time will tell. So far no problems between any of the rays, but they aren't mature yet either.

Your setup looks great mate, can i ask how you keep it so clean? Do you have to scoop out the crap often or you just leave it to the filter? I'm scooping out crap from my rays daily..

Filtration consists up a sump with filter pads catching the large particles. I do vaccum the gravel with each water change and clean the walls with magnet scrapers on occasion. I have found the biggest problem to be the many small root fragments that break off.

Tank is 72" x 36" x 20". Holds something like 200 gals, plus another 30 gals in the sump.

Forgot to add there are a dozen or so tetras in the tank as well.
