here's my story, iv been keeping fish for about 2 years now. everything from SA/CA's cichlids, africans and last was a planted tank. i got a great job about six months ago the involves me working out of town for 15 days at a time. i didnt have the time to look after my planted tank and i was starting to get bored of the whole planted thing. iv always been intrested in piranhas so i bought 4 rbp's while i still had my planted tank. the planted tank had everything from harlequins, glolights, neons, cherry barbs and some siamese algea eaters about 40 fish total. not having anything to do with the boring little guys i just threw the rbp's in the tank with them and let the rbp's go to town. 2 days later all the little fish were gone except for the SAE's so its been about 8 months now and the rbp's pay no attention to the SAE's at all. i can put 15 feeder gold fish in and the rbp's will eat them all but always leave the SAE's alone. i also have had a red crayfish in with them for the 8 months and they dont touch it. has anyone else had any luck with tankmates for there RBP's or am i just lucky? heres a couple pic's

since the siamese algae eaters do a lot of sitting around, i don't think they catch the eye of piranhas as easily... i have experienced the same thing in the past with otocinclus and plecos, they all ended up as lunch eventually, but they lasted much longer than some of the other fish that are constantly on the move.

my sae's are active all the time. they swim right in front of my p's faces and they dont even flintch. my p's have gone a few days without food and still pay no attention to them.. lol i think they know they clean the tank for them and just dont wanna eat them lol. no but really they just dont care about them and i dont see them starting too. my p's range from 5-6 inches long and iv had them since juviniles.

skip a couple feedings. those SAE's will disappear like david copperfield...

shame on you for the goldfish. bad for p's you know.

people act like u cant put nothing with rbps but u have 2 be willing 2 test it out urself
you can put whatever you want with your piranhas as long as you don't care about the health of the piranhas and/or the fish that you are putting in with them.... seeing as how this is a forum for piranhas, i assume that when people ask "what can i mix with p's?" or "can i put ______ in with my p's?", they are looking for the answer that gives priority to the health of their fish, otherwise they wouldn't bother taking the time to ask.

i still think it's strange that the algae eaters haven't been eaten if they are that active... in the past, when i have tried a few small oto's, they stayed alive until they became brave enough to start swimming all over the tank, as soon as they crossed in front of a piranha, they were done

Hey nice tank you have!
I have a rbp also and his tankmates are a pleco and a cory. The pleco would even try to get stuck on the pacu as he use to do in the glass lol unfortunately the pacu don't like the idea lol. There's no way to know if your pacu will or will not attack other tank mates but i know a guy who have a pacu for years and a pleco and they did just fine!
Take care :)
