Ketapang leaves (TERMINALIA CATAPPA) are sometimes known as Indian almond leaves or Huu Kwang leaves and are native to South East Asia. Their use is the 'trade secret' why some breeders are so successful in breeding Dicsus, Bettas, Angel fish, Arowanas, Neons etc in Malaysia and Singapore. They release organic acids like humic and tannins which lowers the pH of the water, absorbs harmful chemicals and help create a soothing and calm environment for the fish.

Traditional medicinal uses:
Leaves, bark and fruits: dysentery (Southeast Asia); dressing of rheumatic joints (Indonesia, India).
Fruits and bark: coughs (Samoa), asthma (Mexico).
Fruits: leprosy, headaches (India),
Ripe fruits: travel nausea (Mexico)
Leaves: get rid of intestinal parasites (Philippines); treat eye problems, rheumatism, wounds (Samoa); stop bleeding during teeth extraction (Mexico), fallen leaves used to treat liver diseases (Taiwan), young leaves for colic (South America).
Juice of leaves: scabies, skin diseases, leprosy (India, Pakistan)
Bark: throat and mouth problems, stomach upsets and diarrhoea (Samoa); fever, dysentery (Brazil).
Modern research has identified some properties which could be used to treat high blood pressure.

Wow.. Thats a lot of info on the almond leaves.. Ill def be adding some when i get an aro tank...
Thanks Koji

you can use black water instead of almond leaves if you cant find the leaves anywhere around you, they can do almost the same, but the effect of leaves can last little longer than black water.
the dried almond leaves are sold for fish keepers in China, but they are not cheap here..:(

BW can never come close to ketapang leaf actually... from most of the brand I used and tested... they're most colouring IMHO.

As expected, these leafs are been sold at a high tagging over your side...

you think a red arowana and a jaguar chiclid would behave together?

Really hard to say until you try keeping them together. I got a jarguar too. But this fella is so aggressive that I couldn't keep him with any other fish.:irked:

You can always try asking your LFS to help importing those teabag looking one to use. Those are processed ketapang leafs in them.

simply awesome breathtaking arowanas...and a very informative clip about ketapang (here in the philippines, it's called "talisay") water conditioner; arowana keepers swear by it
