Wanted to show this little red monkey I got 2 weeks ago, stood out to me since most LFS in my area if they get any bring in a 8" or more monster male but this one looks female based on the vent. In the past few days she's been digging pits like crazy so it got me thinking about if I'll ever spawn it.

There is very little info on SRM on the internet but I assume most males are infertile like with most amph x vieja crosses. What other fish would produce some nice looking fry, any suggestions? Best looking imo that keep a similar look were from some pics on Chris Rounds FB were SRM x red syn but fertility is also iffy on male red syns. Maybe a fader ZZ can make some nice classic kamfa faders.

Maybe try and Festae. You may get the males bright blue spangled scales.

Here is a male Festae I had.

If you don't like that maybe a carpinitis

The reason I mention these is to get some more pure genes

Makes sense, thats a great looking carpintis. I imagine they'd come out similar to F1 red texas if red monkeys have more vieja genetics maybe the fry could express more vieja traits compared to texas x bp crosses.

Unfortunately festae are too big for my tanks but that'd be an interesting cross.

Dropped her vent today, she paired up with what I think is a female parrot cichlid I added 3 days ago. Thought the parrot was gonna lay eggs since it was doing some pre-spawn "practice" egg laying behavior on the pots yesterday but its vent shrunk back down now.

They laid in a ridiculously awkward spot haha. The parrot barely fits in there and the SRM is having a hard time sticking her eggs. This is what the parrot looks like.

Some update photos before I move her to another tank. She's been munching on the val every once in awhile which is fine by me but last night decided tearing off all the leaves at the base of the plant was her new hobby.
