Maybe some time in the future. Perhaps in a year or so.

You don't have to buy an expensive $150 kit, my plan if I ever get one is to buy a:

1/2 gallon HOB box (eBay-$20)
Several hundred GPH powerhead (eBay -$15-$20)
Clip on light-(eBay $10-$25)
And of course the chaeto

Just 1 problem: it doesnt look visually appealing. Parents are very, very, very, very, very, very picky on visual appeal. Too much red, theirs a scratch on the stand (screech!), the curved glass makes me look fat, etc...

My parents are kind of like that, I had to redo my whole stand with some sort of plastic coating about 4 times.

Maybe you could tell them that if you don't buy that, your fish and corals won't look their finest :p

Another possibility is an aqua clear filter (most other HOB's will also work) with a light attached onto it.

Or you could always just do what I did and buy a 10 gal tank for 10$ some plexi glass and silicon and make your own, put it under you tank were you can also put your skimmer and heater and whatever else you want so you don't have everything in the display tank. Then buy a small HOB overflow box and a return pump and your good to go, I only spent about $80-$90 and it looks really good.

Seeing as my heater and my skimmer and all of my other equipment is already behind the tank and not in the display tank and i would have to add a hideous hob overflow with a power outage flood danger and more noise the parents would shoot it down before i can blink an eye. And with an iron fist. No convincing prowess can change their minds. Nor getting on your knees and begging for a quarter mercy.

I just came back from the lfs with 8 bags of stuff. Shopping. Its like crack. I lost count after 30 fish. I did not buy any saltwater livestock other than small pieces of live rock rubble to eventually glue coral frags to. And a special abrasive algae remover. That i plan to use to remove that stuff that wont come off the glass. All livestock purchased are freshwater. But holy crap i was soooo tempted to buy this goby. It was looking at me with puss n boots' eyes. I was surprised they had live octopus for sale in a open topless tank. It looked pretty cool. I had never seen octopus b4 in aquariums. Btw SURPRISE! My dad just bought a car! It was a sporadic "oh look theirs a car dealership lets go buy a car" thing. No thought went into this purchase, it was just spastic. But anyway my dad bought a car!!! Its a 2013 bmw suv. Idk the model. Lol.
