I guess I'll do a little update.. currently am switching over to NLS mega fish formula. I was a pretty solid fan of Hikari until I read that ridiculous long thread on hikari vs NLS. The pellets came in yesterday and have been starving him for 3 days now. Will attempt to get him to try it tonight. Good thing is, it looks identical to the massivore pellets AND sinks. Question is.. will he accept the different scent of the new ingredients + garlic (placed in all NLS pellets I believe).
Redoing his entire tank right now... took out the driftwood. got the powerhead on order and am currently in the process of placing live plants all around the sides and back of the tank for beneficial reasons.. well plus it looks better that way
Tank mates.. I've got three 2-spot orinos from Aquascape in another growout. will grow them to about 4 or so inches before they go in with the payara. decided to sell the leaking tank as is and will need to get a larger tank sometime in the summer. I think he's become more of an ass these days; won't take **** from a thick 6" blue gill I had in there. And he keeps doing quick dives to the top of the water.. hopefully i won't find my chalceus on it's side anytime soon. I'll post some pictures as soon as I've got things going steady around here.
must be lucky or doing something right! the payara took the NLS MF pellets tonight no problem. First, tossed in a massivore pellet which he usually never catches but would stir his attention. I thought maybe the familiar smell would trigger his appetite. Threw in NLS MF pellets after that and he took em. Awesome, mission accomplished tonight
I tried to get a video of his feeding, but he was going nuts with a shining light coming at him from dim lighting. perhaps another day. You probably can't tell, but the slightest little pouch he develops behind his pectoral fin means he's full haha
oh! found a picture of him in his previous owner's tank, taken for me before I bought him .
so the other day, i was sitting in front of the tank. i wanted to incorporate plants into the system, but from there, it just wouldn't click. hopped onto the computer, found a good shot of my tank and came up with a nice layout on paint (im no photoshop wiz lol). Got rid of the old driftwood, placed in a new tree stump. Picked it up with my cousin on a fishing trip in the Waldorf area. Love it's characteristics and tried to sink it once. didn't work. This time around, i attached it to a glass tile with stainless steel nails and some sturdy fiber strings.
after emptying most of the tank and shifting some sand around to wash the dirt out into the open water... this is the last bucket i took out of the tank. yuck.
the reading for this water. not as bad as i expected. would've expected nitrates off the chart lol
reading after refilling the tank
wood is in!
payara hiding behind the tree stump. he's getting used to his new furniture
plants in as well
I'm not sure if I like it exactly as it is, but i like it a lot better than before. Stronger powerhead to keep him on his feet, clean water, good food. I think the payara's gonna be happy until he gets his new upgrade in the summer.
