...so i was getting ready to do a water change last night and took the tops off of my big rhom (lucy's) tank. when i reached in i felt a pretty good shock!!! after reaching in a few times to make sure i wasnt nuts, i had my poor g/f come over and unknowingly "feel the water"...this was to verify that i was indeed getting shocked... anyway...it turns out that she bit through the power chord for the powerhead in the tank. shouldnt this have killed the fish? in the end everyone was just fine, but i need to buy a new powerhead.

Well I don't think it would have killed the fish.. My whole lighting fell off the clamps and was in the tank for the entire day.. I came home to find my overhead lighting become underwater lighting.. And the fiken thing was on.. Nothing happened to the fish.. A similar thing happened, my filter, which is inserted in the tank started caught fire near the surface, it seems the wire had partially been cut.. I think fish are able to tolerate a certain ammount of current..

Actually, I think the reason You and Kara got zapped, is because you were grounded.

It's like the bird on the powerline (or electric fence) effect. As lon as she didn't touch the bottom of the tank, she wouldn't get zapped. You on the other hand, were touching the floor. So the current was running through you, to get to the floor!!

Being that she was in the water, the electricity couldn't find a grounding point on her.

Which means, you opened the circuit, and it essentially became an electric fence!!

or you unknowingly have a piranha/electic catfish hybrid whose electrical potential was just recently awakened

sushi is right. You were grounded.
Funny though.

that does make sense now that i think of it. it's funny though...the rhom acted very freaked out after i unplegged teh powerhead. i still think the fish could feel the current.

she could FEEL it, but it wasn't hurting her.....if that makes sense....

Haha Jordan was grounded!! ^^

I like Onion's answer too!! LMAO!! :D

lol...had she bitten into the power and ground wires at the same time i think the story may have been different though.

I once had a light fixture in my tank(Thanks to my three year old sun) I do not know how long it was in there , I saw it when I came home . Here is the real kicker the light was sill on in the water (crazy ahh !)so I can only guess it happen not long before I hit the door . Good thing no body got heart in nether
of our instances .
