My RTC has developed a skin problem and I think it's killing him.

Iv'e done the water tests and apart from the amonia levels being a bit high everything seems OK.

I realy think that He's well on the way out. :(:(:(

Your ammonia levels need to be reduced. start by doing a waterchange and see if the RTC responds to that. the skin problem could be caused by a number of things, my best guess(which isnt a good guess) is flukes or lice. I can see in the first pic that its bottom barbels are rotting.
You should do a wc in the time being, then re test all the parameters of the water and let us know whats what.
Also, would like to know tank size, fish size, is the fish still eating?
If your fish is still eating, there is hope for it.

6 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot
About 20 inches long

No he's stopped eating just now hasn't taken any food for four or five days.

I've seen even a little bit of ammonia affect pim cats in this way before. Do a LOT of frequent, small(15% or so) w/cs (don't clean your filters!) and use Seachem's Prime as your dechlorination. This will help to remove the ammonia and detoxify what is there in the mean while. Also what is your pH?
The other option is that it truly is a disease of some sort. I would PM Necrocanis and see what his experience is with this problem.

Best of luck!!!!!

i've seen the yellow color on big RTC before don't know if its bad but those wiskers don't look good at all do a 50% water change and add salt and see if it gets better don't worry fish go on hunger strikes alot these fish can live a month eazy with no food

lots of cats don't do well with any amount of ammonia or nitrite in the water and also do badly with high nitrates. Your water should read no ammonia and no nitrite. I would also try to keep the nitrates below 20 ppm. You need to beef up your bio filter.

I have to agree with the salt and water change advice. RTC's are in general very tolerant fish but High ammonia levels are especially bad on scaless fish like big cats. You said this was the ONLY problem with your water quality but having measurable quantities of ammonia AT ALL in an established tank is a symptom of much worse problems.

no dont be silly and put him to sleep! theres always hope. id suggest the water change with salt. raise the temperature and add the anti bacterial solution (green coloured) into the water. the fact that hes not eating is bad news but def not time to give up on him yet. my RTC ate a pleco which poked a hole through his stomach but still survived. so yeh dont give up!
