My RTC is on the way out considering euthanasia

Right did a 50%+ change last night and added salt amonia stop and the green stuff for fin and gill rot. he's picked up a bit and ate two prawns this morning.

I'd be strugalling to add to the bio filter as the sump fills the area bellow the tank and has 800+ bio balls in it..........

I was probably over the top with killing him off I just don't want to see him suffer. The amonia levels seem to be strange as the tap water contains no amonia or trace only but within days of changing the water the nitrates are high but the pH is not that high I'll test again tonight aanb let you all know.

Any recient change...up or down in the bio load in that tank? This can have a direct effect on the BB level. By the way having a HUGE bio- filtration area (large sump) and a very light bio-load...(single fish) creates a condition where the BB colony is spread out very thin and suseptable to RAPID changes while a smaller Bio-filter area with concentrated BB (benificial bacteria) is far more forgiving. In other words...it IS possible to have too much bio-filtration media IMO.

The nitrates skyrocket between W/Cs because you've got too much fish in too little tank I'm afraid. All the filtration in the world won't fix that :). With that monster cat I'd imagine 50% 2 or 3 times a week would be necessary.

ummm its great news that hes eating cause its an indication that hes not going to die. but all LFS people always tell me to starve the fish wen they r sick. apparently feeding them makes them sicker. maybe just for a few days. then feed them little by little and build them up gradually.

Definitely put him on a reduced diet while sick. I wouldn't stop feeding all together, but make sure it's clean easily digestible foods such as shrimp without shell. How big is the tank? The diagnosis of fin and tail rot is spot on when the barbells start to deteriorate like that. Increasing salt levels will help, but just keep in mind it's for emergencies such as your's. Salt in it's self can cause other problems in the long run.
