Main concern isn't the substrate rubbing against them but them swallowing the substrate.
Bichirs ain't the smartest of all fishes, they could swallow the rocks and get intestinal blockage.
With sand, even if they swallow, it would be easy for them to pass it out.
Besides, sand is so much easier to maintain than those rocks as dirt can easily get trap in those rocks.
 
been monitoring closely and there is no irritation from the gravel. also, the gravel is too big for them to even fit in their mouth, it isn't pebbles.

all that being said, im switching to sand when i get my bigger tank :)

i went with pool filter sand when i changed my 75g over to sand... $11.00 got me 100lbs at home depot
 
From your sen picture, I can see some which are small enough to fit in their mouth.
Anyhow great decision on switching to sand! Bet it is gonna look awesome!
