Does anyone else keep leopard ctenopomas with bichirs? My Senegal and ctenopoma are inseparable. They are always hunting, eating, and swimming together. b.jpgd.jpge.jpg

Yes. My Ctenopoma follows my african arowana sometimes. It's pretty cool watching a 5" fish following a 13" inch afro. Mine also shares a cave with 2 rope fish, a teugelsi and weeksii.

Do you just have the one Mike? I've got another (.75 inch) one in a grow out tank with a delhezi. Someone once told me they prefer to be in pairs or greater because they are so shy but my big male has never been anything but bold. I'm interested to see how the dynamic changes when I introduce the other fish during my next upgrade.

Do you think that having a greater # would reduce aggression? Were they only aggressive during breeding? I was planning on having 3 in my 75g since I'd never heard anything about aggression problems. Do you think having different (but similarly sized) species of ctenos would be as much of a problem? I could still return the small one since I just got it. And hey, that might free up some bioload for another cat or bichir :D...

#of what? If you're wondering about their aggression on mating, they wont even bother to make an issue with another fish unless it's a snack-able bite-size fish for em, as bubble nest breeders so most of the times they'll just scatter eggs around the tank, they don't participate in parental care, and in the hobby it's kinda rare to have em breed.

I meant greater # of ctenopomas E.C. since Archers said they hate pairs. I thought having more than a pair might spread out the aggression.

Youre right they wont make issue with others but they dislike each other. And youre right theyre bad parents, they started eating some of the fry when it became free swimming. I wrote a thing about the breeding thats in the leopard ctenopoma sticky at the top of the other monster fish subforum

Not really I had three in a 55 the two that paired up and bred and another one. I got rid of the one because he was chasing and kinda harassing the pair.

I think three in a 75 would work though.
