My Senegal looks sick. HELP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes the qt tank has been cycled for about 3 weeks now.

Plecos dont do anything but hide in the caves on the other side of the tank. Green pleco likes to climb on the glass at night but thats it

I watch my fish very closely everyday for maybe 30 minutes to and hour its relaxing for me, anyways.....I picked up a young Senegal from the lfs 2 weeks ago and he has been doing great! Very active like to eat frozen de-shelled shrimp and blood worms. But the past 2 days he hasn't touched his food. He just sits at the bottom of the tank and doesn't move unless my Golden loach trys to snuggle with him. He is 2-3" long the water has 0 ammonia, 0 nitrates the water is perfect his tank mates are a Blue gourami, 4 diamond tertas, 3 black skirt tetras, 2 columbian sharks 1 green pleco, 1 snowball pleco, 1 common pleco, 1 black ghost knife and a demosani ciclid. The tank is a 55 gallon right now and will be upgraded to a 120 by the end of the year. He is my tank favorite any help would be greatly appreciated. I currently have him in my quarantine tank with 3 feeder guppies

I want to hit on a few things to help you out,
First,,your pleco's will eventually start to eat the slime coat of your sen,,pleco's are never a good mix with any polypterus.
If he is getting bullied around the tank and stressed out it will cause him to stop eating, if you see discoloration on him remove him or your pleco's,add salt and raise the temp of the tank at least to 80/82.
Although polypterus are very hardy nitrites at 90/100 ppm is on the high side try doing more water changes to keep it at 20/40ppm if you can.

And remember things get lost in text and no one here is trying to be a dick

No it wont hurt the other tank mates. I use aquarium salt for every water change I do. Let him come back to life in the qt tank. Choose ether plecos or bichirs cuz that combo wont last any longer. Get your Nitrates down. I've had Bichirs live in 180ppm short term. They can handle it but it quickly leads to diseases that needs to be treated. If your struggling keeping the Nitrates down....add more filtration and cut back on the amount of food.

Please keep us updated.

Sorry for harsh response from others. Its part of this web site but not all of it. Keep reading other peoples threads and all the stickys on Bichirs. You can learn a lot from clicking on threads where people made mistakes. Theirs a lot to learn about polypterus, so keep it up.

Thanks Pontis. Now why are plecos not good to have with the bichir. My bichir is my favorite but I just got my Green spotted pleco and a snowball I'd hate to give them back....(I dont have the receipt) my plecos want nothing to do with him my green stays on the wall near the top and the other never comes out of the cave even at night. I have the Nitrates at 20ppm now I did a water change early when I first started this thread and everything is fine and may I ask why is the difference from aquarium salt to untreated sea salt? Just curious I'm not going to throw in something that shouldnt be there I just want to know what the process is that makes the salt different.

update: He breaths deeply it looks like but he doesnt move much he'll move 4 inches in about 2 hours.....
