My Severum...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, but i'm not going to take that bait. :) I admitted I was a jerk, for whatever reason, and apologized.

Would my severum care if I decide to put in another fish that isn't a severum? Or would they have to pair up by chance? I've only ever dealt with pairs of angelfish...

edit: But you are quite right. That comment about the date joined was ridiculous and really an ahole thing to say. I am not really that way at all. I am sorry... I was in an off mood and took it out on a person I didn't have to deal with off of a computer.

edit 2: Just for the record, that "I don't necessarily have to have another severum, do I?" question was rhetorical, and more of a hint that I wanted to go another way. It was not a question I expected an answer from. :)

Yes, I have stuff to learn, but don't we all?

Ok, after sleeping on it, and realizing how much of an ass I was yesterday, I decided to comment on this post (if you must know, I had an argument with someone that left me a little less than in a good mood. So I went on MFK to cool down... It didn't work).

Yes, I was in the wrong entirely with my tone and attitude, but this post below does exactly what you got on me for doing.

Wow...a little more than a jerk, Id say...
Yes, I admitted this and apologized immediately after I realized I was out of line.
YES, you do need a bigger tank and need to learn more about the fish you keep....
I know a great deal about the fish I keep. I don't know everything about severums and catfish, but yes, I know a great deal about everything else I have. To think otherwise because of my post is misinformed and foolish.
" I don't necessarily have to have a severum, do I?"

Your thread SHOWS you dont know what youre doing, so save the internet know it all talk for somewhere where people cant see someone new to the hobby coming a mile away.
I addressed the "I don't.... do I?" question. It wasn't a question I was expecting an answer to. It was a question I knew the answer to, but wanted to gauge others opinions on choosing something else for a mate. ;)

My thread may show I have a couple of things to learn in dealing with cichlids, and even in dealing with my emotions properly at times, but to take this thread and use it as a representation of my ability and knowledge at fishkeeping as a whole is pretty naive.

To say I don't know what I am doing is wrong. Morally, and factually.
Dont get me wrong, NO ONE hear knows it all, but to act like you do, when its apparent that you dont, is asinine at its very core. We all learn from everyone here, regardless of the date under our avatar.
You see, this is your problem:

You take something I did (and apologized for), and turned it into something I do. Whether you don't have the ability to rationalize, or you just have some kind of personal grudge with me now, I am not sure. Either way, it's not right.

Now, let's move on...

ok well i wasnt even going to respond to this post since yes were a complete a-hole when i just made a comment trying to be helpful for you and your fish, but since you did apologize now and this looks like its going to get out of hand lets just stop the arguing here and move on, by the way yes we all have a lot to learn but for you to have a bgk in a 55g and say you know all about them means you have more to learn than others, bgk can get up to 20in long (albeit rare in captivity) but they definitely get longer than 12in which is how wide a 55g is so for you to keep him in there and then to even contemplate adding more fish to that tank shows just how little you know about them and their needs, im sorry if this post turned out more argumentative than i meant it to be but you need to reasearch more about your fish and the space they need and i by no means know everything but at least i dont try to say that i do when im obviously wrong

Sounds good. :)
by the way yes we all have a lot to learn but for you to have a bgk in a 55g and say you know all about them means you have more to learn than others, bgk can get up to 20in long (albeit rare in captivity) but they definitely get longer than 12in which is how wide a 55g is so for you to keep him in there and then to even contemplate adding more fish to that tank shows just how little you know about them and their needs,
You don't understand then. I am well aware of how large they grow, and how large all of my fish will grow. There is nothing to suggest otherwise. I never said I was never going to get a bigger tank. It may have sounded like that, and that is my fault. I am just not capable right now. Seeing as how my BGK is 8" right now and growing slow, I don't have an issue.

I got this guy a year and half ago when I didn't know anything about them, and have bought 2 new tanks to house him since. I am doing the best I can considering, and that is working fine right now. There is no ignorance on my part anymore, that was gone long ago. :)
im sorry if this post turned out more argumentative than i meant it to be but you need to reasearch more about your fish and the space they need and i by no means know everything but at least i dont try to say that i do when im obviously wrong
Again, how does having an 8" BGK in a 55g tank right now make it obvious I need to research more about my fish? It's obvious I didn't know what I got myself into a year and a half ago, but you know what people do? They learn. Saying someone's past ignorance is indicative of their knowledge now is ridiculous and a logical fallacy.

I am sorry about yesterday, and I can't say anything more than that. You can continue to think I don't know anything, and that's fine. Ignorance is ignorance.

If you think my stocking is a little heavy, that's something entirely different. It is heavy stocking, but I can prove to you that they are some of the healthiest fish you will ever see. I don't post in the cichlid section of this site often at all, but you can ask most people that know me here, I know what i'm doing.

I don't pretend to know everything, but I know a lot about my fish and I won't let anyone tell me otherwise.

if thats the case then ok you have learned just as all of us have had to through out our fish keeping experiences but you did say this

No, i'm not getting a new tank. No space, no money. I have been thinking about selling/trading in the cat for a while now... This makes it a much easier decision.
so this is why i was under the impression you didnt know how big they got

Absolutely... Seeing this now, I can understand why you would think that.

I do know the potential size of the BGK I have. I am expecting no less than 12" when full grown. Having said that, it's a bit of a touchy subject for me because I do know, but can't get anything larger right now :)

I apologize again... You did not deserve that AT ALL.

I really am not a jerk. I'm sorry.

lols biggest derail ever!
and idk if i wud put another cichlid in with ur sev..

Yes, big derail... I was a complete _______ (insert negative name here)...

I just need to get my catfish out of the tank before she gets too aggressive, then I'll figure stuff out from there. I'd like to get another fish for her, but I don't know yet.

I would move her to the 55, but I am worried she'd disrupt everything. I don't need her laying eggs in there and going after my bichirs... big no-no...

I'm just gonna add to the madness and get another small fish tank for downstairs. I can't get rid of anything... I'm too attached.

I'll be on the lookout for some cheap setups on craigslist sometime next month. Hopefully I can find anything from a 20g to a 40g for the catfish.

I will make sure it works out until then.
