My silver aro stays in one spot, whats wrong?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So, I took out my powerhead over the weekend but it didn't change anything. Aro still stays by the filter. I'll try some floating plants as drgnfrc13 has suggested. Is hard to maintain live plants, or is it ok to get plastic plants? Hopefully this problem will cease sometime like drgnfrc13's aro did. I guess hes still getting acclimated to his new home. As advised, I'm now doing 50% water changes so I guess I'll keep observing and definitely will ask for help if needed. Thats what these forums are here for, right!? Thanks to everyone for the help

My lei did this when I first got him. I originally had an Xp3 with the "water jet nozzle" to shoot a stream of water across the surface. He didn't like that. So I took that off and and just let the water dump/shoot straight down into the tank. It oxygenated the water more yet provided a more gentle flow accross the tank.

Do you notice him breathing heavy at all? Using his mouth to draw in water every few seconds?

No, I don't notice any irregular breathing. But, may I ask what you were getting at, for future reference?

Well, in my case, I wasn't sure if my fish was breathing fast becuase of a a lack of oxygen or stress from being pushed around the tank from the current. I still don't know which one it was, but it was either one or both of those cuases for my fish. After I changed the flow, his behavoir changed.

I was really asking to see if your situation might put an end to my old mystery.

you should test or get your water tested. usually the aro supposed to be active swimming the whole tank. if you have ammonia or high nitrites/ nitrates could be why he's sluggish. also depending on you bio load and water quality 50% water changes may not be necessary. some ppl even consider it overkill...

just tested my water at the lfs and turns out the nitrate and nitrites are high, amonia is ok. deeboi was right. I did a 50% wc yesterday, would it be ok to do another 50% wc today? Should I do a smaller wc, or wait a couple of days?

Thanks in advance

cool. some may argue doing that much w/c will mess up your beneficial bacteria. better gradual over time. like 25% every couple days, but if your tank is not cycled, it will reverse the effect and make it longer to cycle. best to get a good master water test kit. w/ ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/ph..

Thanks deeboi, a couple of people earlier in this thread were telling me to do 50% water changes and I was reluctant for the same reasons you mentioned. What would be the correct way to reduce nitrates/nitrites/ammonia? Regular water changes and less food? Lfs advised me to buy Nutrafin Biological aquarium supplement. My aro's fins aren't perfect so once I get the parameters alright then maybe they will look much nicer.
