My snake just died, help...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry for the loss of your pet.. :(

please dont let this turn you off on herps,if it was something with the caging then we can all learn from it,if not then it was just a weak specemin. If you are who i think you are then some ppl were telling you the cage is too large,my corn is a bit bigger than yours and also in a good size cage with no problems so unless the temps have been way too low or their is no water im not sure.It may have been sick from the time you got it.Any other herps in your home? When i was a kid, well 14 or 15 or so i went through this crummy stuff a few times from things i did wrong but if i remember right, you had it going good, and you researched quite a bit.Again im very sorry.Keep us posted though,we can all learn from this.PS,if your feeding it just frozen pinkies then i doubt it choked,i could be wrong though, still just a little human.

Not trying to pry or anything, and I haven't been following your experience with this snake, so I don't knwo anything....what was your set-up like? temps? feeding regiment? etc How long have yuou had him

It always sucks when an animal dies by seemingly unknown causes. It couldv'e very well been nothing you did. Sometimes they just weren't meant to survive.

Thanks for your understanding everbody...I'm going to go bury him in a minute.

I have made some posts, I'm sure I have done everything right. I guess it's because he was such a delicate little baby...he wasn't hiding under the bedding the last few days, that might have had something to do with it.

It didn't choke, it had digested the pinkie a couple days ago.
I want a corn snake still, but I can't just go gt another one now...doesn't seem right. Maybe some time later. Well anyway, thanks everyone.

EDIT: I am supposed to dechlorinate the water, right? I use the amquel+ I use for my fish. I have been told to dechlorinate the water, but I want to be sure this wasn't the cause of his death.

Chlorine evaporates out of water pretty quickly. Maybe your water is treated with chloramine?

Um... I don't add any chemical additives to any of my water for any of my reptiles. Amphibians are different, but I still wouldn't add chemicals to the water. I would either filter it or let it age.

I doubt chlorine or chloramine had anything to do with it, I have NEVER treated tap water for any of my snakes.

IMHO I think it almost had to be husbandry related. Temp, pinkie too cold, ect. Just do your homework and try again, we have all made mistakes early in the hobby so dont beat yourself up to badly. ;)

Thats the most import thing, don't take it too badly, but even more importantly, learn from it. Sorry for your loss mate.

I wouldn't treat your water mate...
I use bottled water now only because my water is much too hard and limey, but I've always used tap water before that.

Thanks for the advice again. I guess it's an experience to learn from.

Thanks for your advice davo, but maybe your water is different over in England. See, over here, they started adding chlorine or whatever to our water systems a few years ago. Anyway....maybe I'll get a corn snake some time again in the future.
