well i have a ally snappet about hand size, i noticed his shell was geting alot of alge on it and it he was flacking off pices and the stuff under it seemed to have a while fiml under it, kinda like it wastnt rdy to be exposed. anyway someone sugested to get a tooth brush and scrub and clean his shell alittle and the aply some vita shell to his shell. so i while i was useing the tooth brush another chuck of the shell came of, itw as soft on the top layer but hard under nieth. the spots where part of the old shell fell of still havt seem to harden fully and started to bleed alittle when u clean the shell with tuth brush so i know i have a problem, i know his shell should be pretty solid and should bleed from alittle scrub of a tooth brush, so i stoped and coated the shell full of the vita shell stuff and put him back in. if anyone has any advice on how to fix and whats wrong pleace let me know. i was told that ally snapper dont need a basking lamp bc they live under water all the time and under substate, so i never provided him one. for a light he has a normal aquarium plant light. so would a basking light help his shell. thanks in advace for any info

what a sulfa block, and ill def raise the temp alittle, ty for info

So what you are saying is that he has no spot to get out of the water?

All turtles at least need somewhere to get out of the water I would say. Some may disagree with that.

What does his diet consist of?

Size of tank?

Water Temp?

Substrate?

he is hand size in a 15 gal to him self, he has a rock cave and rocks to clim up on to get out of water. just normal blue gravel from pet stor mixed with some sand. water temp is 70ish. he has been i there for almost a year and been fine but the shell thing started happeninga while ago gradualy so i didnt think to much of it so i just made sure water was always clean

Alligator snappers are a non-basking species, I've never even seen a pic of one basking, let alone seen mine out of the water...

i would add some salt and increase the temp.... i did this for my old lil one when it got a fungus worked great...

^^ I agree

SULFA BLOCKS ARE THOSE LITTLE WHITE TURTLES THEY HAVE AT THE PET SHOP WALMART HAS THEM TOO. I LIKE THE ONES TETRA MAKES, ALSO ZOO MED MAKES THEM I HAVE HAD MANY TURTLES OVER THE YEARS AND I AM A BIG FAN OF THIS PRODUCT. stop scrubbing the shell for now. sorry about the capital letters. i agree with nic also, if you cannot get the sulfa blocks
