Hi Im new to this website, so Im going to start from the very beggining:

I started with 1 Oscar, 2 piranhas, 2 raphaels 1 catfish in a 30 gal (I know, I know, just wait). I got them all pretty small, and I knew I have to upgrade soon.

About 5 months later I upgraded to 110 gal, and moved them there, I have 1 eheim 2217 (260 gph) and 1 internal filter (no brand name, 466 gph), a rena 400 airpump (mostly because I like how the bubbles look in the background).

Anyway, to celebrate my new aquarium, I decided to get a Stingray last saturday (aquarium was cicled for 1 week, using water from the old aquarium, and pretty much all the decorations and filter media from the old filter). I tested the water, 0 NO2/NO3, 0 NH3. I didnt test PH, since almost always its between 6.5-7.5 straight from the tap.

I did a small water change (20%), and proceed to add the stingray. It looked ok, all day, swimming around checking out stuff, didnt get bothered by any of the other fish.

The next day it was lying belly-up in the bottom, no visible signs of being attacked. The shop I got it from has great reputation, and I get all my fish from them, they say they had it for 3 months.

To wrap up, I wanted to know if anyone can help me with possible explanations to the sudden death of my stingray, also since Im getting store credit from the store, Im wondering If I should get another one, but I dont want it to end up the same.

I also appreciate Ideas as to what to get, im thinking of a Jewel Ciclid, or an arowana (though I think it might get to large for my aquarium).

Im not sure, It looked like one.

What its weird is that usually it would take sometime for it to die from nitrate poisoning, anyone knows of anything that can kill them that fast? (supposing it wasnt sick to begin with)

I'm not an expert on Stingrays but it sounds to me that you need to do al little more research on them. I don't think stingrays should be added to new aquariums. They should be added to settled, well established tanks.

It's nice of your LFS to give you a credit for this ray cause it seems to me that there was something that you did to cause its death (this was not meant to sound harsh). I would post this up in the stingray forum since there are a lot of smart ray keepers there. There's also a lot of useful information there as well.

how lond did you take in acclimating the little guy?

I took my time, I let it float inside the bag in the aquarium for like 20 minutes, then I let aquarium water into the bag little by little for about an hour.

I think a much better way to acclimate them is to use the drip method. To do this, put the ray into a 5 gallon bucket, LFS water and all. Then tie off the end of an air tube hose so that only small drops will drip out of it. Get the water dripping through the air tube from your tank into the 5 gallon bucket. The acclimation process should take several hours. I sure some on here do this for up to 4 hours. If the bucket starts to fill up, just pour some of it back into the tank and contiune the drip process.
