My stingray died - The first day!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1st, you are trying to keep stingray with 1 Oscar, 2 piranhas, 2 raphaels 1 catfish???
that is a big no-no.......

2nd, if there was 0 nitrate, then the tank was NOT cycled. A cycled tank always has some nitrate.

a 110 is NOT too small for a small ray. for a grow out tank.. Of course the ray will outgrow it though. But the smaller the tank the less diluted the water is and the smallest mistake can be deadly.

I hardly acclimate my rays, they are pretty tough, i usually acclimate 10-20 minutes tops. I try to get the temperature close and then dump them in!
I use to slowly over and hour or 2 acclimate them. But i feel that you slowly add a higher PH water to the Low ph water which makes the ammonia in the bag more deadly! So that is why i try to get them into the tank ASAP!!

You would get better help if you would post in the stingray section.

Im not sure, It looked like one.

What its weird is that usually it would take sometime for it to die from nitrate poisoning, anyone knows of anything that can kill them that fast? (supposing it wasnt sick to begin with)

AMMONIA!!

I think a much better way to acclimate them is to use the drip method. To do this, put the ray into a 5 gallon bucket, LFS water and all. Then tie off the end of an air tube hose so that only small drops will drip out of it. Get the water dripping through the air tube from your tank into the 5 gallon bucket. The acclimation process should take several hours. I sure some on here do this for up to 4 hours. If the bucket starts to fill up, just pour some of it back into the tank and contiune the drip process.

Thanks, I'll do that with my next fish, its a bit late for my stingray...

AMMONIA!!

Thanks, well it wasnt 0, its not like I have a digital nitrate-o-meter, but it was pretty low (lowest olor in the scale).

Can you explain why is it a big no-no?

My guess is the tank is not properly cycled yet. I would wait a month or so before adding more fish and let the tank fully cycle. Even though you used the old tank water and the filter media, you still have 80g of fresh water. Good luck I would try another in the future minus the pirahnas in the tank

Piranhas, are way to aggressive and 1 bite can be fatal to a ray!! look at the pictures just below the "batman" rays. i hear that this started from a piranhas attack. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149245&page=2

Oscar are very territorial and could bite the rays eyes. Raphaels can be ok, but if the ray tries to eat a small one the fin will cause serious damage.

i can't be sure, but i would bet either the rays was unhealthy, or that it died from ammonia poison.

Thanks for all the replies, I will add this story to the "lesson learned section". I might get another ray latter.

BTW, I'm still waiting for recommendations on what to get with the store credit!!

ATM nothing.. leave the tank and it's current residents for a few more weeks until your 100% a mini cycle is done/not happening. You risk the rest of your stock if you add more fish imo at this time.

Ditto what MonsterMinis recommends. One week is way too short of a time for a full cycle to have been completed. Let the tank fully balance out before adding anything new to the bio-load.
