my stingrays are swimming at the top

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There should be 0 on both of those, that shows your tank isn't cycled or is going through another cycle because of the large load placed on the system. This is likely the cause for the stressed Rays. Change water ASAP and treat with Prime/Amquel as needed.

just keep the water changes going. i would do 30 % in the morning then 30% in the evening.
how long was the tank set up for before the rays where added?
if you have another large cycled tank then maybe move a couple to that tank.
6 rays is a lot for that size tank.
what species of ray are they?

hi....i have done a 70% water change and also added AMMO LOCK from API

Shall keep you posted....thanks for all the help...

cheers

I am not positive but I believe I read somewhere that using ammo lock can foul up your readings
on your water test, ie: mask the actual water conditions. Maybe someone can chime in who knows for sure.

For the nitrite you can add a couple teaspoons of salt to the water to protect the fish but in general keep the water changes going until the filters can handle the load.

ammolock turns ammonia into less harmfull ammonium which is picked up by most ammonia test kits.
so while using ammolock/amquel you will continue to get high readings. sometimes off the scale.
use of these products should be only short term.
dont forget ammonia test results are useless without a ph reading. for example at ph 6 and below 0.1 ammonia reading is perfectly safe. have a look on the internet for a conversion chart(ph/temp/nh4)

filter bacteria will eventually break down the ammonium into nitrite once you stop using the ammolock. so be carefull with nitrite spikes as the bacteria responsible for nitrite conversion take longer to multiply to cope with increased levels.

could write an essay on this but have got to get back to doing work
