Ok, here are the Sump Plans for my 180 i should get it by friday.

The sump will be 36" Long x 12" High 6" Wide.

I plan on Putting the sump on top of the tank. It will be made of acrylic. IT will be 6 " wide and the tank is 24" wide so ill have 18 "for the lighting on the front end of the tank. The sump will be Hidden by a Canopy.

Reason for the sump being ontop is the tank will be on a base on the floor the base will be 6" high and will be made out of 2"x6". The Submersible pump will only have to pump the water up about 1 foot so this will increase effectiveness.

My questions are how much GPH should be enough for the 180 Gallon tank.

Also what Bio-Media would you reccomend.

Thanks

here is a Pic of the idea.

then it wouldn't be a wet/dry filter, different bacteria grow in the fully submersed bio media than in the media that is open to air and dripped through.

yea i tihnk you need somthin uptop for special bracing so it won't fall that be bad... :) canster bio medium is best imo :) go with that :)

dont waste your money on bioballs.(i learned the hard way) even if you were to go the wet/dry route, use nylon pot scrubbies. way more efficient and cost affective . If you dont go with the wet/dry id still probably even use the scrubbies for submersed media

Also what is the refugium for? i think for your setup its kind of pointless.

You should shoot for 1000gph with the head height takin into consideration

You should also think about putting your sump on the floor. more practical, unless space is must and dont-have

Do you have a Harbor Freight around??

A 9g sump on a 180g tank?!

What other filters are you going to be running?

If this is it, you could leave out the bio-balls and stuff the whole thing with an Ammonia absorbing resin with a pre-filter, turn the tank over about 3 x and have a very light bio-load.

Curious... How did you calculate the size of this filter?
