My Sump Plans for a 180

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am new to these types of filters. On the one i plan on having 4 fish maximum. For now two flowerhorns.

Are wet and dry bacteria better than submersed bacteria?

DR.Joe I went to the conversion tab but i forgot to take into account thats it's not going to be completely full.

I guess im going to have to improvise maybe making the filter like 2 feet high and using the same system only the water falls straight down. Ill post the idea later on tonight.

Ok, I have thought this over How about this.

Same principal except that the bottom will be egg crate lined with water polisher and filled to the top with bio-balls the blue line you see up in the sump is a tube not sure if im going to make it a pvc pipe or flexible tube. the tube will distribute the water threw the sump and it will simply just fall back into the tank physically. I think this will solve the weight issue.

But it doesn't solve the volume issue.

What's the target turnover rate?

Rather than changing your idea completely, think about switching your refugium area and bioball area, then lowering the drain. Also, It seems like it will be a bit small. additional filters would probably be needed.

I just talked to my dad and he said we can make it 6 x 1 x 1 foot. Now that i think about it i really wont need a refugium as all the fish will be separated by separators.

I'm also new too the sump world. But I do know that volume makes a big difference with your setup. Mine that I am building I think is also a little off. I am constructing a 10gal sump for my 55 Gallon tank. and will utilize a first chamber with heaters and sock filters for the incomming water from up top. Then overflow and rain across bio balls and pot scrubbers. Finally then pumped back up top to the tank again. Here is another fish lovers version of what I am building.

Now your talking a usable volume . Now you have room for pre-filters (filter socks or poly-fil) and still enough room for bio-material (a labyrinth system would do well with this length)
