I say go with the Thomasi, lovely little fish.

The other option would be the little african barbs (either Barbus fasciolatus or Barbus Hulstaerti)

I don't think I'd be able to find any African barbs in Australia unfortunately.

Good point on the nipping fins. I guess I would go with kribs.
