Hello,

I have lost 12 fish out of my 55 gallon African Cichlid tank. I noticed a few weeks that an albino was doing the mating dance with a red zebra that was one of the dominate fish in my tank. I didn't care about the mating as the fry would not survive, however he would not leave her alone and ended up killing her. For some reason his aggression continued and seemed to start a war. When I came home from work there was a few that had been attacked, torn up mouths and fins. I ended up taking out the red zebra, however it seemed there was a few doing the damage by this time. I now have removed a johanni, my other red zebra, and two livingsonti (sp), and it seems a lot more peaceful in the tank... but the damage was done. I would notice the attacked fish laying around, and not eating. I even tried putting a few of them in a different tank by themselves, however they are all dead. That was a week ago.

I still have a few (mainly larger fish that have been around for a while) are still not eating. It also appears there is a few fresh wounds. I took my water in for a test yesterday and all is great with the biggest issue being Nitrate at 20 - and I was due for a water change, and was completed today, along with a complete redecoration of my rocks.

I notice that one yellow lab that isn't eating has a film floating around it's mouth. Was not sure if this if from not eating, or if there is something else taking place.

Any suggestion on how to react? Has anyone else beat what I am battling right now. I would have to lose more fish than I have to.

Thanks for reading my book =) I appreciate your time!

I am not sold that ick is involved. I could be incorrect as well, however there is not spots on any of the fish outside a missing scale. It appears that most of the damage is in the mouth area, and I have witnessed some jaw locking. The pic with the yellow lab doesn't show that the area near it's left eye is all torn up. Another lab has blood marks in the mouth area as well. The blue cobalt in the pic is going to die fairly soon. I believe the johanni was going after anything blue... I am lost on what was going after the labs.... probably the Livingstoni being they were small and stayed low in the tank... last time I buy a fish because the kids thinks they look awesome.

I could treat for ick / lymphocystis... however I am not sure if that will make things worse if that is not the case.. /shrug

any other thoughts?

its not ick. well its not just ick. read the stickies on this subject. Its a great read

It looks like they were wounded around the mouth, and it is now infected. You probably have to tread for bacterial OR fungal infection, I'm not sure which. If possible, can you get the infected fish out to prevent anything from spreading to healthy fish?

looks like some kind of fungus i had a rainbow shark that looked like that i told my local lfs about it and they hooked me up with some meds and within a few days it was all cleared up and my fish got his apatite back... not sure of the name of med but it was a blue liquid
hope its a quick fix and your fish come back around!!
