My Tank...quick videos and a few pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I found a sideways anime bunny with its tongue sticking out. Still nothing strikes me to be identifiable as a lady.

I don't know what picasa 3 is.

Very nice setup! One of the most natural looking tanks I have seen. And your warmouth looks great!

DREAM-faw, thank you for the compliment, I am a lady. Don't understand your question about the driftwood. Are you asking how did I get algae on the wood?

Sorry about that. & Yes, how did you get algae on your wood?

First, start out with wood that some algae on it.

Secondly, you also need a lot of light.

Thirdly, and the most important rule I discovered, algae does not like to be moved. Once you have it growing, don't move the object it is growing on.

Fourthly, and VERY IMPORTANT TO ANYONE CONSIDERING USING ALGAE IN THEIR TANK, once algae starts growing, it will grow VERY QUICKLY. The algae will attach to glass, you can clean it off with a floating magnet. It will be back in 1-3 days, if you leave your lights on.

If you try loose floating algae it will get caught in your filters, so finding pieces that have algae on them already is best.

****Don't forget Algae does not like to be moved!!*** Even if you find pieces with algae on it, it will turn brown after being put in your tank. Leave it alone, it will come back.

Algae that has turned brown will take 2-4 weeks to start showing again.

Good Luck!! Follow

First of all Rays I dont think Ive ever seen a better post on Algae :D ! Is it just me or are your Warmouth schooling in your pictures?

The warmouths that came on Thursday seem to stay together. They will come to the front of the glass to see what's going on.

The blue gills are tolerating them in their space. Only one pushes the warmouths, which is unusual, instead of biting.

I wonder if the one blue gill (smaller than warmouths) is not biting because it doesn't want to cause a fight, that it thinks it won't win. I thought that the blue gill may be in trouble, when the warmouths heal.

I didn't have time to take all the fish out and rearrange the tank, for the introduction of the new fish. I am hoping that the new fish will have time to heal before I have to tear it down.

If the tank has to be torn down, the fish need to be in decent shape to be able to challenge and possibly fight. Sometimes the battle will go on for hours.

It is truly a site to see, when all of the fish are taken out and reintroduced to a newly created tank.

All of the sunfish immediately start sparring with huge body swings towards the rival fish. They would be side by side about an inch apart, then body swings(left, right, left, right) then one would break off. The one that stayed claimed the territory. Sometimes there would be three challenging each other at the same time.

Thanks warmouth!!! I really like the algae in this tank. Sometimes, it wants to take over the glass, but I can tame it. I forgot to mention, algae will only grow in the light. It won't grow at all in the shade of a tank. Once you see small round dots on the glass(brown, green)clear it if you don't want the algae there.

Thats incredible......Ive never heard of Warmouth schooling before! I too like the "natural" look, Ive tried to do it with just rocks and sand before.....next time Im going all out with plants, driftwood (with algae on them :D ) over the sand/ rocks. Ive actually got detailed plans written on some copy paper...... LOL!
