Hi everyone!

I don't know what happenned, but two days ago the water in my 5 gallon tank turned to a clear brown. The fish in their are doing fine, but they look as they might be starting the finrot disease. I hope it isn't because of the filter. I changed the pads yesterday and changed 30% of the water. It hasn't helped. Can anyone please help and give me some advise on what should I be doing next?

Thanks for reading,

Did you add driftwood?

Hmmmm... I don't know then. I would do a round of water quality tests (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia) and look for some uneaten food that could be rotting somewhere. Those small tanks are hard to keep balanced because it dosen't take much to throw them out of wack.

thanks for the advise :)
as soon as i will check the water i will report
also, yesterday i siphoned the gravel completely, so i don't think there is any rotting food down there

Okay, so you did a 30% water change, changed the filter pads, and siphoned the gravel? You might have messed up you cycle. It sounds like you pretty much cleaned all of your biological filtration.

The bacteria are much more resilient than you think. They double in population every approx. 18-24 hours.

@OP: Get some fresh carbon in there. Could test the water (mainly ammonia and nitrite) as well. If you think any of your fish have fin rot, set up a hospital tank with some sand, gravel, or media from the tank they came from and treat with maracyn 2.

Yes, I have been wanting to try purigen at some point, I don't have any personal experience with it, so I didn't recommend it. I have heard good things though, from people who have actually used it.
