My thoughts on why a kid shouldn't build a monster tank (things to consider)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, ive been into fish since I was 7, im 17 now, still love fish keeping the same. But I did pick up other interests along the way(reptiles, arachnids, girls, ect) so time was taken away from what I previously dedicated to fish. Im OK with power tools, and what I dont know my dad usually knows, but right now I dont think it would be a great idea to go out and build be 500 gallon ply wood tank. Especially with school and everything.
There will be plenty of time for some real monster tanks when Im 20 something. Until then, gonna enjoy being a "kid"

Only to those who care to participate in it. :duh:

Ok well this is clearly a thread directed to Andrew but as much as I don't like him people don't need to make a thread just to bash him. Everyone has stated why they think he should slow down. Now he may choose to listen he may not, but no need to make a thread directed towards him. That being said what the op said about taking things slow and researching goes for everyone doing a "monster" build not just kids.

I think this hobby does a lot to keep kids out of trouble. I was into fishkeeping when I wad 14 because my parents bought me a 15 gallon tank...almost 20 years later, it's something my kids and I do together. Sure I would never turn my kids loose with a Mag77 Skilsaw and let them build by themselves, but I definitely will throw a 100 gallon aquarium together for my daughter or son if that's what they're into.

This x1000

It was the same in the reptile world. I have only been into fish for a year and a half now. I was HUGE into reptiles... Had burms and monitor lizards you name it since the age of 14 to 18 I had them. I went to school, sold them all for school. Havent touched them since but I still love them. When I came out of school I moved in with my best mate and LONG time fish keeper (since he was 14 haha) he got me into fish and I started with a 90 Gal. Got rid of that, picked up a 125 did salt, got this 180 I have now put monsters in it. Also set up a salt at my gfs hosue. But all with massive amount of research and a very experienced hand guiding me through everything.

Inspired by his threads, yes maybe..... directed at him, no. Matter of fact besides you only one other seems to want to bring his name into this and make it about him. Maybe try posting your opinion on this topic, instead of trying to turn this into one of those typical derailed threads that get closed.

And where is this bashing you speak of?

Someone else actually brought his name into it to but anyways there's no need to single out kids. By no means do I think that a 14 year old should build a 500-600 plywood tank by themselves, but if there parents want to spend the money and they're going to help and supervise then why not. If the kid gets bored of the hobby thats the parents fault and they can always sell everything. And I wasn't trying to derail the thread and get it closed, although I do think it should be.
