okay i have been researching this for a a quite a while. i have been wanting to get a bigger tank, and build one myself, so i thought for a while, and then i stumbled upon a forum about a guy building a really cool pond(3000 gallons). under 2000 dollars. which for me was really interesting. so i have been asking my parents for a week now and just yesterday they said its okay. so during some free time at school or anytime i get during my day, i was planning everything, sketching it, filtration, wat kind of pond i want to biuld etc. so my final rough draft was;
-2800 gallon koi pond
-approximately 9ftx14ftx3ft
- biological filtration
- submersible pump (3000 GPH)
- skimmer filter base unit
-waterfall filter with 22" waterfall mouth
- biofilter booster

heres sum pics of the area this pond is gona be place at.

^as you can see i already place giudelines to estimate and visualize the pond.

make shure you dont have any wires running under were youll be digging at, and make shure leaves arent going to constantly falling into the pond.

just an idea..
you might want to give it a little more room around the corners for easy access all around the pond, how deep is it going to be?
what are you gonna stock it with? cichlids?

ya i checked on the blueprints of the house thats theres no wire running near the pond. the nearest is at least 4o to 50 ft away. but power supply for the pond will be done by my dear friend who's a landscaper who's is familiar with power to ponds and pools. for the trees, i set a schedule of trimming the tree twice a year so it look good and not leave a mess on my pond.

im actually gona move the pond a little towards the camera and left to the pic so i can have a really good access to the filter and power supply behind the waterfall at the near end of the wall.the pond will 2- 3 ft deep and the deepest will be 4 ft. im going stock with traditional gold fish and some koi. not sure but im actually researching it, i have heard thats arowanas will do good in ponds but im not really convinced by the stories but im researching and i will see if i can stock any other fish.

i dont know about doing arowanas unless you can maintain a really good temp in the water... i dont kn how the water temp will amintain by you

i have noticed that but either way im going to use a pond heater on the pond.

Call Miss Dig to get any underground services flagged. It used to be just for Michigan but should be nation wide, I used it in NY recently. They contact all of the local companies like cable, telephone, water, gas, and power. The companies come out and put flags on their services... free of charge.

You can also call 811 if that service is set up in your area.

sure thing thanks. this will help me alot. the blueprints i saw were like 30 yrs old.

I know ponds generally have a totally different train of thought on filtration... but I run nearly 4000gph on my 200gal fish tank, so 3000gph for your 3000gal pond might be a bit slim.

I'd run some numbers on heating it before even considering fish that need warm water. Dunno what the ambient stays like there, but a pond is large, and open to atmosphere and evaporative cooling, so keeping it warm can suck up a TON of energy. Parents might not be all smiles anymore when they start getting the hydro bill. (I'm assuming you're not paying for the power if it's at your folks' house.)

i live biuld ponds in Michigan for the #1 pond biulding company in MI and the number one concern about your desighn is that depending where you want to place the water falls, you will need to give yourself more room to create a natural slope down from the lip of the biofalls. you dont want to make a sharp angled drop or you loose the natural look. Another concern for every pond is the burns that you create around the pond, make them low enough to not become an eye sore but beware of making them too low, this is always an area will leaks can and do form over time.
