MY TRICK TO A CLEAN SUMP :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had the same problem in my sump and yes I do use pre-filters... The pre-filter cannot prevent everything from getting thru. Inevitably some particles are gong to make it thru the pre filter and into the sump. I see nothing wrong with what you were attempting to do. I had a few "dead spots" in my sump where dentritus and other stuff would collect. I added a a powerful air pump that has multiple outlets and then attached 4 air disks two in each side of my sump in the dead spots to prevent stuff from piling up. I'm not sure what happens to all the crap but at least it's not collecting in the corners anymore.

I use 200 micron pre filters which I change every two days for clean ones.

Now THIS is a different story. If it piles up so you can easily get it out and you DO get it out often, then it's doing you real good.. Not just cleaning up a visible mess.

Cleaning the mechanical portion of the sump should be done MUCH more often than 6 months.. I don't plan on cleaning any bio balls.... ever...

With good mechanical filtration before the bio-media, sump cleaning should NEVER be needed more than every 6-12 mo. since theree won't be anything to clean out. If you have to clean more frequently either enjoy it :D or rearrange the filter. Clogging the bio-material decreases it's efficiency since the bacteria live of the ammonia not the solid waste.

:iagree: you should never have to clean the bio-material (except in the case of a filter crash or contamination and then your starting over), just rinse in used tank water if necessary.

DR., (:D) What am I doing wrong then?? I have an over sized pc of pre-filter in the hang on overflow. I rinse it out every 4 days and replace it once a month. I dont get like a lot of stuff in my sump so its not like im floodong my wet/dry with a junk carpet. I just get stuff in there and I'm trying to find a solution to getting just about nothing in there.

What is a good mechanical filtration before the bio media?

You need a way to take out ALL of the little pieces of stuff. Filter mats don't really filter out small stuff. Fine filter socks do.

Can you post a pic of the sock situation.

The reason why you should never need to clean the sump is that this should be the cleanest water in the system... it's the First part of the water cycle and where the "cleaned" water is being put to be put back in the tank.

A Filter sock looks like this bs_amsock[1].jpg

These socks can be found in most Lfs?
Around how much are they?
