My Triglachromis Otostigma

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had one so I have no advice to lend on spawning them but they do appreciate a nice place to hide. Mine kept it's own in a 60 gallon tank with a spawning pair of Greenwoodochromis christyi, trio of Callocromis pleurospilus and group of young C. microlepidotus. Bulldozed the hell out of that tank though. I liked to keep it busy. The fish would spend a good week piling all the sand on the bottom of the tank into a privacy window that spread all 4 feet of the front glass. Every WC I'd pack it all down even and the fish would have to start all over. I'd like them again but My husband won't let me add them to his Tanganyikan tanks. Says he likes to see his fish. :(
Only real word of advice I have is to mind foods too rich in fats and proteins. They're mud/detritus sifters and are prone to bloat.

Hmm... From what I've read, they don't tend to become bloated very easily. I currently have 4 in my 55g along w/ a mated pair of WC chaitika yellow comps. I have noticed That they dig quite constantly and, like yours, about 3-1/2 ft. across the front of my tank they have mounded the sand almost 6 in. high. I have been debating on whether I should smooth it out or not, as this may be a part of spawning.? Not quite sure why yours hid all the time, but mine are out all the time, and only retreat when my 3 yr. old approaches the tank (I laugh at this quite frequently, as none of my fish really seem to enjoy his presence)

and the foods i use don't tend to have a real high fat content anyways, with the one exception being bloodworms for my comps/calvus, and they tend not to share these w/other fish.

One of my favorite Tangyicans,I was told that they make tunnels in the muddy substrate in their place of origin which may explain why they are such busy diggers in the tank.
