my trimac pair

Not trying to answer for him but there are many reasons. Aside from fighting breeding also stunts growth so maybe he's trying to get some size on them first.

Really? Wow... never heard that before.

Interesting. Was just curious... I never knew their growth could get stunted from being paired up? Learn something new in this hobby everyday!

Absolutely, breeding exhausts a large amount of energy. When a growing fish is breeding the nutrition and energy that could have gone towards growing is now being used for egg production, courtship and guarding the territory. This can make a big difference for growing fish.

I don't know if I'd say stunted. Very true that growth slows if not stops altogether, but I've had many single fish put out to pasture after their breeding mate died and they continued to grow.
To me, stunted means they don't have the ability to grow any more.

That's interesting. I really never knew. I have seen so many young, breeding pairs grow large together, be it my own or be it friends of mine, it never occurred to me that something like that was an issue! As I said... learn something new everyday... one thing that makes this hobby great!

I'll have to keep this in mind moving forward.

Let me clarify. Stunted in reference to growth simply means that it is slowed or retarded. Stunted does not mean stopped growing. By no means am I saying they stop growing or will be smaller as adults.

Yes, WildCAught is right. I separated them so the smaller on can put on some size. The larger trimac eats likes a pig, leaving very little food for the smaller one.

Thanks for id (ing) the sex of the first fish. It act like a male. I had the 2 together and I can see the 'tube' of smaller trimac extending, cleaning the pot, black bars so I guess the bigger one was a male.

No prob, if it weren't for the black blotch, I probably would have thought it was male too. It's nice and chunky with great color and finnage.

Thanks all for commenting. Jealous?? Don't be, Cavamart have some fries for sell. He's a great seller.
