sounds like a bad amonia spike to me. catfishe's wishkers often erode in bad water conditions. You did good by bringing stuff from your already cycled aquariums, but even then I would start it out with cheap danios, and test the water params for at least a month to make sure it is not gonna spike! This is also consistant with the gill covers being red. Not sure what to tell you cept he will probably die in that water if it is high amonia. they also lose their wiskers often with fin and tail rot. Ammonia spikes are probably the number one killer of fish in a new tank. if there is no existing tank that he can be moved to I would probably try ammo lock or something chemical as a last resort. normally i wouldn't suggest it, but in this case i don't know that you have an option!
