I was waiting for a chime in from you. :nilly: Do you suggest a base sand or just all out live sand?

You know, i love caribesea live sand. It cycles the tank so dam fast, and just sets you up for such a great beginning. If i have the extra cash i go caribesea live all the way, but my last tank i didn't have the cash for that. So I went half aragonite and half live sand. Aragonite is a ***** to clear up, but its a really FINE pretty looking sand. It doesn't kick up to bad after the first 2 weeks. But for that first 2 weeks everything is freaking covered with a light crusting of that stuff! Its worth saving the cash but dam, reaching down 12ft of tank in my 360 was such a pain in the ass!

Ebay has some great deals on sand as well, much cheaper than anything else.

I always go to petsmart for my sand, aragonite is 10-15$ for 30lbs of aragonite, and only 40$ for 40lb bag of caribeasea sand.

lol btw i just happen to catch this post in the new posts, i think this is my first post in this particular section ;)

Awesome, I usually troll the forums without posting so I was hoping to get more people to help out. Puffer and Kevin have been very helpful so far. I'm just trying to get my bases covered before I go in and make a mess of a beautiful idea. I will check Ebay. Thanks for the suggestion.

As for LR, one of my LFS' has LR for $1.99 / lb. It's cured Fiji and looks great. I think I will be going with them for it.

Thats a good price, i got lace rock for 50 cents a pound, then stacked live rock on top for the finished look. :D

aquatraders.com is said to have the best lights for the price as well...

They had some base rock in there, but I didn't get enough time to look (On a shopping spree with the fiance)... but they had a full grown peacock mantis that I got to stare at for a while. Those things are awesome... I wish they were reef safe.

Those lights are super cheap. I saw a couple on eBay that were priced relatively the same. Thanks for the link. I will probably be buying the t5 + MH + LED moonlight combo. 329... you can't beat it.

you really cant, and mantis can be reef safe, but thats all you will have in the tank with your corals. I would suggest anchoring things down, but that would be a super special pre caution tank.

I went with marcorocks.com for my aragonite, should be getting it in tommorow or wednesday. 160lbs for $100 bucks shipped, not a bad deal at all.

Ya I think the hifey would murder me if there was only the mantis shrimp in the tank. "Take a look at this awesome 72 bow front... with one 8" mantis shrimp... cool huh?" Knowing my luck he will round house the coral just for swaying the wrong way.

Awesome, I will definitely check them out. Thanks for the link.

Because I am a freak I think I will be starting a 3 gallon JBJ Picotope as well. I know smaller tanks require more care, but the manageable expense is something I can deal with for the time being until I can drop a bit more on the bigger tank. Those modded AC50 fuges are awesome.

I dont really believe that smaller tanks are that much more work. Looking back, its all about proportions.

People will say other wise, but...

Proper filtration
Proper bioload
Proper introduction of micro organisms

If you have that in a tank, regardless of size, the work starts to diminish. Measure your waters parameters, know what to look for, and you're golden. Just dont expect to keep anything other then a hermit or a "sexy shrimp" in a 3 gallon.
