My unstable AT

That's actually my dist. sexfaciatas in the avatar, who I unfortunately killed when I added melafix to the tank without noticing that it was under-aerated (the spray bar suction cups slid 3 inches down the glass and I had recently moved the HOB to another tank that needed some more mechanical filtration). He was my favorite fish and he and his larger buddy both died. The Lusosso barely survived and if I hadn't woken up at 2am to get water the whole tank would've died. But yeah, he has even more of a beak (the lusosso has the elongated nose) and even though he patrols the other end of the tank he does take some trips over to Thurman's end. I have a tiny little sexfaciatas in there again now and he is really spunky, but I really miss the one in my avatar.

I did a 40% water change today and when I refilled it I put in a lot more salt and tried to lower the temperature by 2 degrees. It was at 83-84, which is odd since the AC is on a constant 73 and the heater is set at 71 - obviously that dial isn't accurate. I usually keep all my tanks at 81-82. (For some reason the heater light is on right now, which is annoying, I guess I'll have to turn it down more). Anyway, it's an hour later and he is significantly brighter and more active. Not super silver like he used to be (or like the new silver) but way better than he was this morning. I'm going to feed some krill later and see how aggressive he is.

The water parameters were fine before but maybe I just underdid the salt when I set up the larger tank. I'll keep an eye on the temp, maybe allow it to drift to 84 again just to see if he reverts... I'd be surprised if that was it though because all four other dats are fine. More likely it's the salt.

I have access to 2-3 more little ITs if I want them, but at 40 a pop that's a little rough. Plus the tank is pretty well stocked now and there's a baby aro coming in a few months. They're not going to grow fast enough to ever really crowd this but I still think 5 is enough. But maybe I'll change my mind.

good news on the tiger. Sorry bout your disc's. We never get good quality disc's here in uk.!!

Looks like youve found a possible solution. just keep everything constant.. maintenance wise.

Some one wanted to sell 3 IT's 3" for about $90 total (£60). at weekend. Instead i got these 2 weeks ago: pics

Just an update on this guy... since removing the syno and green terror and isolating another fish his color has improved greatly. He's not super bright silver but he's no longer nearly black. He swims freely a lot more and will occasionally nip at the ITs, especially during feeding time. Every visible wound has healed. So that's all good news.

But he still seems to be outcompeted for food at feeding time. He looks all anxious when I come over and drifts up towards the top, but if I dump the krill in it's as if he can't see it. He usually only gets a tiny piece, if anything. And he also still spends a bunch of time wedged into places vertically or bent over, sort of flopping to one side, which really doesn't look good at all. Right now he's over near the divider with his head up, ocassionally drifting back to horizontal, but on his side. It looks really unhealthy. But then he snaps right out of it and looks normal for a while.

Could it possibly be some sort of swim bladder issue? I'm really worried because before he looked bad but was mostly just rehabbing injuries. Now he looks like there's something more seriously wrong with him even though his colors have improved. I should note that the little AT as well as all my ITs are doing very well, and the little AT is a pig just like this guy used to be.

Here are some photos. (tank looks awful because I splashed water out when moving the driftwood and setting up the divider).

I think he's definitely blind. He was just out swimming casually and crashed right into the big lusosso's face. That's really not good. He doesn't have cloudy eye or anything visibly wrong, but he clearly can't see food or other fish.
