My Wild Caught Hoplarchus Psittacus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just got a 2"er. He is an awesome fish already. Grats on the Psitt!

In my experience with Hoplarchus Psittacus they are only aggressive to their own kind (conspecific aggression) if they've paired off or are spawning/protecting their fry.

Honestly they're like Bruce Banner/the Hulk in terms of aggression change.

My male is much more aggressive than the female big time but after removing fry they both go hang out in a group with the other two with no fights at all until they start spawning again and then it's back to my big Male being a huge *******. (on a side note this was the only way I could figure out which was the male and which was the female as it was a surprise when they spawned and I wasn't worried about venting them yet)

It actually helped to add other fish to the aquarium; figured it would spread aggression out over more fish. However now my pair sticks together with their little ones and doesn't bother anyone unless they get too close.

In my experience they are very passive with the exception of conspecific aggression from the male once a pair has formed and start spawning or are protecting fry. Then the spawning male can be an absolute terror...

It's like the flip of a switch from passive to absolute relentless harassment of any other H.Psittacus in the tank with the exception of the female he's paired with.

My female is as big as the male and the only difference I've noticed is that the male keeps his fins fully extended the majority of the time while the female is more subdued with her fins close to her body.

The male will actually "flex" his fins sometimes, it's quite cool to watch.
