MyDevils Tank is 90 degrees

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think its important to note here that a big concern in places where water gets hot is the o2 content.
Hot water can hold little oxygen so more pumping and airration are a must in hot water. You could blow a fan across the water as well
or get discus (lol). But yeah doing cold water changes and ice is a good idea. If its a long term thing you could get a chiller but those are expensive

get an air conditioner for the room,,it will also be more comfortable for you when watching your fish. win win situation.

I've kept several types of cichlids at 89 F for up to 4 weeks with no health issues whatsoever (mainly when treating the tank for ich), and I've read of tanks that get to higher temps in summer with little to no losses. Just make sure you have lots of surface agitation and water circulation to raise the o2 levels

If you're worried though, open the lid and turn on the air conditioner... or put a fan next to the aquarium... that should be enough to cool it down at least a few degrees. I know people use frozen bottles of water but I don't like that idea with cichlids unless it's an emergency... believe it or not I've seen some of em go into the early stages cold shock with just adding water at 70 F to their tank.

Came home from 3 day weekend and found my tank at 92 degrees!. Damn Jager heater failed on the on position.. Tank's back to 78 and fish seem fine thankfully.

thanks for the suggestion guys. i did a couple water changes and right after this post, we got lucky with summer and it hasn't been so hot. his tanks been at about 80ish or so and i just took out the heater for now. he's doing just fine. :nilly:

You don't have to take out the heater... heaters are designed to turn off automatically when the tank reaches a certain temperature... so basically the only thing you're doing by taking it out is risking your fish to a cold shock if the temperature were to drop all of a sudden.
