Myleus schomBurgkii and Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I won't turn this into a fight again

But I don't think the twin tails will get to 16 inch all other tins yes but not the twin tails

I had 3 x gold and 3 x twin tails and in 5 years the golds got to 14 inch and the twin tails just over 10 inch

The twin tails tails do eat ray poo but the gold tins didn't

I know there is 3 - 4 different Latin names for tinfoils so maybe the size reflects the name as I have seen some shops sell what they say are twin tails but they are.not the same the tail is still very red but the black bars are faded and you can't hardly see them on some larger ones but the type I have has deep black stripes and a black flick on the dorsal fin

You can get them very cheap at a small size and they grow very very fast and out grow many small tanks so are returned to shops all the time but it's normally the normall types you see

You get a lot of fish for your money I sold my 14inchers for £10 each and even at than money they didn't move fast and they would eat £10 per month in food

Thank goodness for that Richard...i'm too tired tonight for a fight..lol !!
I saw a shoal of these about 25 years ago in a aquatic shop window, this was the first time I ever saw the twin bars. These were easily 16" long, they were massive, the largest Tinfoils I have ever seen to date, I would also like to add that this size is rare in domestic aquaria, having said that in a tank like yours that holds 1000 gallons there shouldn't be any restrictions so it will be interesting to see how large they will grow.
12-14" is probably more accurate as a guide.
I know exactly what you mean with the faded bars, I believe this is a hybrid between the common Tinfoil and the Twin bar. I always order the twin bars under the correct latin name from Singapore, the fish at this size have clear fins but the dorsal spot and caudal fin bars are very prominent "even" at 3".

makes alot of sense . Probably the case.

If they do grow to 16 inch the growth from 10 to 16 inch must very very slow as they have been in the big tank for over 2 years

The axlrod book does say they stay smaller than the other tinfoils but a lot of sizes are out in that book

They are a great fish for a ray pup tank as I just used to leave loads of pellets in the tank for the pups to munch on over night and every bit of food was gone in the morning from the rays and tins

Thank you for chiming in! I remember seeing this tank and couldn't find it anywhere for the life of me! Very stunning tank!

So you have to have a night light on? I was thinking that I would have to modify my DIY LED set up for night time lighting to give myleus a chance at survival.

I always use a night light.
When i dont my myleus are Silver ,noblack bars.(i think stress)
I think they are less stressed when they can see what is happening in the tank at night time.

i know what you mean at night i had a shoal of 14 $$$$ and lost 2 on the 1st night but the rest got the idea and stayed clear from then on

the same happened with the tins 1 got killed over night then the rest was safe so its best to get 1-2 more than you want just in case

one other thing if its tins you are getting or even $$$$ make sure you intend on keeping them as when i moved my fish over to the new tank it took 1 hour to move 3 big rays a tig and a 22inch asian aro but it took over 2 hours to catch 6 tins dam they are fast and taking the net out each time they go to the other end doesnt help with the tank middle stress bar and that was with a big net

thank you for the replies!

I have 18 right now and trying to acquire more before the rays come just in case they want to eat few.

I know what you mean about the stress T1! I had to drain the tank to catch out other fish along with some of the small SDs that my brother threw into the tank to grow them out. It stresses me when they dart into the glass and go into a frenzy!

I had some rocks in there with the scape and had to remove it cause they damaged themselves pretty bad when they get hysterical.
