When I say alien, I mean alien to my tank. My 253 gallon tank has 2 large overflows built in. About a month ago I noticed a few tiny fish in one of the overflow boxes. I thought it kind of interesting but left them alone...except to ensure they were getting food. They've been in there at least a month that I know of. In the box it's very dark all the time because it's made of thick black plastic. I scooped the 3 fish out with a net today and threw them in my Festae fry tank. They're eyes looked very tiny at first.

What are they and where did they come from?? See them? The striped orange and black fish, not the Festae. They appeared in a cichlid tank and they're not cichlids so that rules out fry. The only thing I added to the tank when I got it was a huge chunk of wood that was in a big wood bin (out of the water) and dry as a bone when I got it. So I don't think they were in the wood. Maybe though. Can anyone ID these fish? It looks like a barb of some sort. I have some Filament Barbs in the tank but they look completely different-i.e.-no stripes. They're less than an inch long.

Sorry for the bad pic quality...they don't photograph well.

Definetely looks like a barb to me, although the variety is unknown. Id be really interested to know where they came from if you figure it out. I dont know of any fish eggs that can survive dehydration and rehydration but who knows. There is nothing else foreign like plants in your tank that could have had eggs? I know that plants at my lfs(s) do sometimes come with fish eggs :).

Those are definitely barbs, I'll try and get a species for you.

This is really strange. I don't have any plants. The tank has only been up and running for a couple of months. I can't think of where they might have come from. The only way is if they came in as eggs on the dry wood and managed to hatch. (can't bettas and some other fish do that?) I'm going to let them grow and see what they turn out to be.

So you think they may have been eggs in the overflow. If you have only had the tank up a short time. Where did the tank come from? I would find out if there were some similar fish in it.

That is so awesome..i have a clown pleco that mysteriously entered my tank..but this is really something.. cuties too!
