Mysterious Deaths?

Its the use of canister only. I used a 180 gallon rated canister in a 29 with my cichlids as a trial for my 125 project. I left the hob filters going and turned them off one day when I went to work 9 hours later my fish were almost toast all near top or sunk to bottom. Only lost one but it was my prized male kribensis and first fish in my cichlid tank. Very sad. I realized it and went and got an air pump and tried to aerate like crazy. Put on three hobs to stir in water and lowered the water level to increase splash and oxygenation. I only lost one but it shouldn't have happened.

Ok, I have ruled out PH as it is 7.0. I am running a API Filstar Cannister L for up 175 gallons and the Aquaclear 70. I put in 5 tiger barbs and all of them died overnight. I think my next step is to drain the tank and refill.

Usually when I have started up all my tanks. Like my 100 gallon I took 50% from my already cycled 120. I gravel some of the poop when I was transferring the water to my 100 to help with the cycle. Then I took the filter off my 120 and put it on the 100g. Let it run for 2-3 days then I added a couple of goldfish and left them in there for about 2-3 days. If they're doing fine I added a couple of fish. Wait another week, add a couple of more fish and so on. What I am think is you added to many fish at once and had a spike. That's why I usually add fish slow and wait.

I am draining my tank now, completely. I still have perfect levels in the tank. However I did notice bright red on either side of the vent on all 5 dead tiger barbs. It has to either be the silicone or some kind of poison was in this used tank. Not sure???

be more than red with ammonia, ammonia burns the fish, eyes be fogged up, visual burn, gills bleeding and parts actually falling off. takes a awhile for ammonia to kill. unless you poor some in.

I'M TELLING YOU THERE ISN'T ANY AMMONIA OR NITRITE! PH IS 7! The only thing I can figure is the silicone or something the previous owner put in the tank or gravel.

i would change all your water out and put fresh in. i like to use seachem prime. it is a good all around water conditioner. while removing the water, i would vacume out the gravel to get whatever is in there out. i doubt there is anything in there ut you never know. once the water is all changed, make sure you aim your canister output towards the surface to maximize surface agitation and help with the gas exchange. putting in a few airstones will deffinately rule out oxegenation. if you just put in a few small fish, they wont be able to produce that much ammonia in a few days. i know that you have done tests that say that it isnt ammonia. if non of this works, i know how much of a POA it is but you may need to scrape off that sealant and try again. maybe the stuff you used was mismarked or contaminated. Just for piece of mind, i would run a few tests on some untreated tap water.

Ok, I have striped out the silicone and replaced it with ASA aquarium silicone and I have replaced all the gravel I had in the tank. I have refilled the tank and I am 2 days in with 6 tiger barbs and all seems to be well. All fish are eating and active, no signs of any stress. I hope it was the GE I silicone, I hope I'm in the clear with this project. Thanks for the input from everyone.

I've herd of peolpe blaming GE silicone 1 for the deaths of there fish some peolpe claim that even thow it claims to be 100% pure with no anti fungal ingredients some bottles are "tainted"
