I guess we will chalk it up to poor acclimation on my end

I've put wild rays into my water which has a ph of almost 9.

Adjust slow, and keep them clean and consistent.

Sounds like shock. I have always drip acclimated any new rays slowly for between 1 and 2 hrs. personally.
