I would say it has some carpintis in it but with those dark markings along the lateral line I'd say that it's got something else in it.

I've never seen a full carpintis or cyanoguttatus with the black markings. I might be wrong but my vote goes to possible hybrid.

A larger picture would help.
 
It is either a Texas Cichlid or a type of carpinte, I'm leaning towards a carpinte. Definetly not a Jack Dempsey. Real nice pickup, should look super when it gets bigger.

texas for sure can't tell for sure but it could be a hybrid but just looks like a carpinte

gets around 12'' if male and 8'' if female should grow up to be a real colorful fish :thumbsup:
 
Carpintis has my vote. The markings are too large for a texas. I've had a few juveniles with similar markings, though not as pronounced.
GL, they start to look awesome around the 5 inch mark. Thats when their color along with their adult shape really come into play.
