Pretty common for something like that to show up at LFS, due to the fact that the fish they get in are often farmed outside in places like Florida. So native fish do get mixed into the ponds and netted out periodically.

People pick up stuff like madtoms, killifish, sunfish, etc., at the fish store quite often due to that.

very true, got my american flag fish like this in a batch of feeders

wish I could get a pretty fish out of it....besides the COUNTLESS guppies I have gotten from buying feeders

Well here is some sad news....woke up this morning and the fish is gone....we didnt think the flathead would eat him, being he was faster, and BIGGER then the flathead...thats just our guess...he wasnt anywhere outside the tank either. He is just gone :( we have had him for awhile I was starting to actually get attached to him.

Do you have any cats or dogs? I know I've caught mine eating fish when they jumped, and a few times I've had fish seemingly disappear and I think that's maybe what happened to them.

But as far as the killi being faster, it doesn't really matter. I just put my marble cat in my 220g and there's 3 large tinfoils and there WERE four small tinfoils (I wasn't worried about him eating the smaller ones). Well now there's only two of the small tinfoils left, even though they're much faster than him. I think at night when the tinfoils go to sleep, or are moving slower and can't see well, he catches them, since he's generally awake at night.

If you want a killifish, look into top minnows. They're usually prevalent in most states, and you can net them directly off the top of the water (assuming your state laws allow keeping native wildcaughts). They don't need a big or complicated tank setup and they'll eat stuff like small floating pellets.

Yes we do have cats which i didnt even think about until you said something, it is possible he jumped out by the filter and the cats got him...but I dont know why he would jump, he never has before, and never thought he would :(

Hmmm. Flathead may have tried to get him which caused him to jump.

Or he just got spooked in general. Or thought he saw a bug or something to go after and went out. It happens.
